Air mix o ring and washer on 1975 CB550K?
« on: June 11, 2013, 08:50:32 PM »
Did the 1975 CB550K come with an o-ring and washer under the spring and air screw?  Mine doesn't have them and I don't see them on the parts fiche, but I am chasing a slight off-idle hesitation on my bike and wondering if I am missing some parts that might be contributing to the problem.

Thanks

Your problems are elsewhere, just the air bleed screw and spring. It's usually the downstream fuel mixture screws (on other carbs) that have the o-rings on them.

Same on my 550... thought it was strange as the screws can be a little damp after a ride.. seems as though there should be some sort of seal..

Wouldn't hurt to add one, these bikes aren't new anymore and as such some parts may have a little more clearance than intended.  It's amazing how much the engine vibes affect stuff like the mixture screws over the years ;D

Yeah mine seem to get a little damp, too
I'll think about adding some...wouldnt that affect the setting, though, since the screw wouldnt seat as fully in as it was intended?

My 77 550 with pd carbs has to o-ring /washer setup and they are still damp after a ride. Doesn't seem to affect anything so, whatever.

Back to the OP as stated already your problems aren't with the lack of an o-ring in the air screws. You need to give your carbs a good cleaning (its probably your pilot jets are clogged) and inspection. a 3000 mile tune up shouldv'e been done. Then a carb sync. Also check your fuel flow from a clean tank and fuel tap and clear fuel lines. I wouldn't start adding things that Honda never intended and expect it to run better.

Not planning to add the o rings since I think it would alter how they seat anyway

I started an earlier thread about the hesitation.  Carbs are clean, main and pilot jets are new OEM.  All carb settings are stock.  Tappets and timing are set.  Carbs are synced.  Tank/petcock clean and there are already clear fuel lines with inline filters.  There is a slight exhaust leak which I will be fixing in the next couple days.  The exhaust is aftermarket 4-2 and it is leaking very slightly from the collars where the mufflers meet the headers.  I'm going to seal that up with Permatex high-temperature silicone and replace the crush washers at the cylinder head while I'm at it.

I started an earlier thread about the hesitation.  Carbs are clean,

Only once? Sometimes 3rd times is a charm! I've cleaned my carbs probably 6 or 7 times since I bought the bike 3 years ago. 3 times right off the bat to get it running smooth and dependable then once a year after that when taking it out of winter storage. PITA I know but that's just me. Even this year I had to pull the bowls off and clean the pilot jets because of slight hesitation off idle. Fixes it everytime.

"Only once?"- nope!!
I've gotten pretty good at taking the whole carb bank off this bike.  Now the only really annoying part is attaching the clamps on the 2 and 3 carbs where its hard to reach.  I replaced the bowl screws now with SS allen bolts so I can get the bowls off quicker.

The previous owner had installed Keyster jets (stock size) which I replaced with OEM.  I thought that the hesitation was due to aftermarket pilot jets.  I kept leaning the air screws because I was sure that it was running a little rich off idle but now I think the stumble was due to running slightly lean.  I've got the air screws at 1 1/4 turns out now and it seems better

What to your spark plugs tell you? try running the bike for a few minutes at the RPM that the hesitation starts to kick in. Shut it off and pull the plugs for color. Then you will knopw for sure if its lean or rich and by how much.

Do your idle screws have the hole in them?  The later 550's had this to prevent over enrichment of the idle, but it can cause idle issues ;D

The 77-78's had them.
