Hand Turn the Flywheel?
« on: June 19, 2013, 01:30:43 PM »
Trying to clear a flooded engine.  With the plugs out can I manually turn the flywheel to clear the chambers? And if so what can I use?  Newb here :o

Just blow air into it or kick it over 2 or 3 times.

Are we talking fuel flooded or water flooded? Turning it over by hand isn't going to build much pressure to blow anything out.

I was talking about a air hose to blow out the cyls. with the plugs out or you could just let it sit and it will evaporate in a few minutes.

My thinking was turning the flywheel would displace fuel in the cylinder with the piston moving up and down, splashing it out the plug holes.  This may be a horrible idea.  Fuel flood btw.

Hit the start button, or kick it.

with the kill switch off of course, and the petcock turned off.
check for gasoline in the oil (overfilled crankcase) and determine what caused the flooding...

Even with the petcock closed you have fuel in the float bowls. Blow the cylinders out with compressed air if you really think that is needed. Flooding will usually dissipate by itself in the amount of time it would take to pull the plugs anyways. I'd pull the plugs, dry them off with a propane torch and put them back in and fire it up.

Take the plugs out, turn the engine over a few times using whatever method you like, clean the plugs, put em back in, fire it up.

Thanks everyone.  I think the oil is contaminated so after an oil change and your suggestions, I will let you know how it turns out tomorrow.

If your oil is contaminated with gas from flooding I think you have other issues that need addressing.

Problem persists.  Initial start is quick and strong.  It dies in 30 seconds or whenever you touch the accelerator.  Any further guidance or leads?  Also, allow myself to reiterate my newb status - first bike.  Dirty jets? Too much air or fuel?

Could well be dirty carbs. How did you flood the engine?

Leaving the petcock open and overuse of the choke during starting.  The bike ran great for a few days when I got.

Remove the drain screws on the bottom of the float bowls to check for sediment. If you find any you will need to clean the entire fuel system. Remove any aftermarket fuel filters. These aren't needed and often cause problems.

leaving the petcock open isn't a good habit, but i do that a lot regardless and don't flood my cylinders.  sounds like you need to go through your carbs and adjust the float levels.  while you're in there, may as well give them the works and clean fully!  ....welcome to vintage honda world ;)   ;D ;D ;D
