Just returned from a great trip through the Rockies ( British Columbia portion), parts of northern Montana, Idaho and western Washington. The trip was great, mostly due the top condition of the roads through the States. We travelled on Highway # 20 most of the American route and I would recommend it to anyone.
Everything was going great until my bike started to act like it was running out of gas (near Tonasket, Washington). It was about due for a fill up so I didn't really worry too much as the next gas station was about 5 miles away. When I got to the gas station I noticed that the back brake ( 76 Supersport) was hot. Closer examination revealed that the bearing retainer had "walked" out of the hub and put pressure on the caliper which caused the rotor to heat up.
I was able to take the wheel off in the parking lot of the gas station (with the help of a local BMW rider who went home to get some more tools) and turn the retainer back in the hub. Fortunately, no damage to the bearings or the axle.
I have read a thousand times about using locktite and staking these retainers so this will not happen.
This is the result if you don't!
