Stake those bearing retainers !
« on: August 03, 2006, 07:24:42 AM »

Just returned from a great trip through the Rockies ( British Columbia portion),  parts of northern Montana, Idaho and western Washington.  The trip was great, mostly due the top condition of the roads through the States.  We travelled on Highway # 20 most of the American route and I would recommend it to anyone.

Everything was going great until my bike started to act like it was running out of gas (near Tonasket, Washington).  It was about due for a fill up so I didn't really worry too much as the next gas station was about 5 miles away.  When I got to the gas station I noticed that the back brake ( 76 Supersport) was hot.  Closer examination revealed that the bearing retainer had "walked" out of the hub and put pressure on the caliper which caused the rotor to heat up.
I was able to take the wheel off in the parking lot of the gas station (with the help of a local BMW rider who went home to get some more tools) and turn the retainer back in the hub.  Fortunately, no damage to the bearings or the axle.
I have read a thousand times about using locktite and staking these retainers so this will not happen.
This is the result if you don't!

Usual problem is getting the damn things out! Never had one undo on its own before. has it been out recently? I would use something like Hylomar jointing that doesnt set to help retain it in case you need it out again in the future
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

At least you were able to fix it and it sounds like you had a great ride.  Hwy 20 is awesome between Concrete and Winthrop.  Tonasket is a favorite stop for breakfast when we pass through there.  We went that way on a recent bike (non SOHC) trip to Idaho.
