Maduncle is back from the dead - with a finished CB450

Hello folks,

I have been away for a bit, in fact I did delete a few forum presences in a fit of 'too much online connection' stress - but I am back here now.

Whilst offline - I found I had more time to actually finish my CB450, so I finished it.







I am pretty pleased with the end result, still need to tidy up a slight charging issue, and maybe I will get sick of those stock carbs and fit a pair of Mikuni VM32's soon.

But it is an absolute hoot to ride!

So now I plan to put my feet up for winter and think about what the next bike project will be...

That is one sharp 450!   Really a classic cafe build.   Well done!  Are the pipes baffled or open?  Exiting at your hip like that I would hope they are baffled as least some.

Thanks Don, I was aiming for 'classic cafe' with the build. The headers are new old stock made in the 70's aftermarket CB450 pipes I scored off eBay, the mufflers are also new old stock made in the 70's glasspak units, with some baffling. I added the heat shields to protect my shins (they work).

The bike sounds great.

Sure is.

I would call it 99% finished - I plan to fit Mikuni VM32's to it soon, and do a little more work on the lacklustre charging circuit.

I took the bike out for a few local trips around town last Friday, took me five minutes to get it gong then it was okay off the kick start.

I called in on a well known Honda race bike builder to show him the finished product, as I was saying to him 'see - its not carrying enough power for the electric start to work' I pressed the starter button...

... and the bike started, smooth as silk! Damn thing new Rex was watching.

The bike started three more times on the electric start that day, then when I got home I parked it, left it for a few moments and tried again - no luck this time, it needs to catch on that first turn or else it is kick start time.

I am hoping the impending Mikuni carb conversion will help the starting system to work a little more enthusiastically.

Not sure what would break first, my arse or the bike.

It will be on many local VJMC here in Victoria though.

It's an option if the bike or body won't handle it.
I use my bikes heaps, but baulk at the thought of riding them interstate.
