Honda Throttle Cables for the 500
« on: September 09, 2013, 11:17:22 AM »
Hey All,

I've been looking at a bunch of different dealer sites, looking for the Cable B throttle cable and can't find any anywhere.

Part No: 17920-323-000
http://www.partzilla.com/parts/detail/honda/HP-17920-323-000.html

Is there a suitable replacement?

Thanks!

If it's the extra 'push' cable, you can do without. I've one new down in the garage and never bothered to mount it. One day I will try if I can use it for renewal of the pullcable. Others may comment, it's dangerous, I have no problem with it. You could have mine, but it's a 17920-323-620 ment for the handlebars for models outside USA so will be to short for USA models.

I'm mostly just concerned with getting a stuck throttle. The kill switch is fine for low speeds, but I am not sure what I would do at higher speeds.

Motion Pro 02-0008 is the "Push" cable I use on my 500 and 550.

It's good to have this cable for a few reasons.  Like you said, a stuck throttle.  But also (this happened to a friend of mine), if you're "Pull" cable ever broke, you can snap the push cable in it's place down at the carbs and reverse throttle it back to your destination, somewhere it can be fixed, or simply back to safety.

Yup, '75 CB550K.
So what about that oversized superstrong centrally located spring?

I don't understand.  The same spring that is pulled to open the throttle with the "pull cable". Can be just as easily pulled open with "Push cable."  Of course to do this you need to swap the cables at the carb end where they attatch on the return spring.  You would also then need to roll OFF the throttle in order to acheive a throttle "ON" effect.  Pictures and pie charts to come.

I use Motion Pro cables, never a problem, can get them anywhere that sells Parts Unlimited,And they are reasonably priced.
A few Honda 500's, a few Honda 550's, a few Honda 650's, '72 cb 450, a couple 500/550/650 hybrids, and 2001 750.

Just for my interest. Has anyone ever had their throttle stick open? That spring is mighty strong.

Not ever, never, not in 34 years, nor have I heard of it (not where I live).

Only time I ever saw it was when a newbie had a bike where the cable was routed so improperly that the throttle would not snap back and needed the push cable to return it.  It was hard as hell to turn, too.  And being a newbie he thought it just worked that way, hahaha.  But, no, I've never heard of that happening either.  But if that big spring did actually break, you would want that push cable.

My spring is still fine after 36 years but I had a new one so I installed it. I don't foresee any future problems. My kill switch works anyhoo.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I already have the motion pro ones, but I hate them :p

Yeah for a 30+ metal spring that is snapping the throttle back, I guess I'd rather have the piece of mind.
