CB550 fuel lines

I went through a lot of previous posts..   I want to replace my fuel lines which are feeling pretty hard & brittle , and install some inline fuel filters. The posts are clear that the correct OEM spec is 5.6mm ID, but it seems that a lot of people have used 1/4" or 3/8". or 5/16" pretty interchangeably without issues.

Interested in pros or cons and a recommendation please

others will fit, and work, but the right size is a joy to work with.

5.5mm will stay on the barbs and not leak with or without hose clamps.

1/4 inch will work but you WILL need hose clamps to squeeze it down properly and reliably.

I have used 1/4 inch hose and regretted it.

Why do you want inline filters?  Honda includes a very good, reliable, and self cleaning filter for most of its models.  Some have a sediment bowl to  rinse out once in a blue moon.  It is especially difficult to use an in line filter and keep the constant gravity fall routing as the bike really should have.

I second that whole post. If you've torn your original screen, replace it. Inline filters are for quitters.

I had a lot of rust in the tank , since cleaned with the Yamalube system , I thought the inline filters might be a good precaution ?

Ebay. Guy sells 32 inches for 16 bucks. In search tab on ebay type in 5.5mm fuel line

I ran a Mr. Gasket glass in-line filter with a replaceable element on my 550. Absolutely no issues with fuel flow.

Go to a ATV/snowmobile/dirt bike shop and get yourself some 7/32" fuel line.

7/32" = .219"

5.5mm = .217"

I got 10' for $7.

What if he has this petcock and screen? I haven't been able to locate this tube and screen. I don't want to be a quitter who uses inline filters!

I'm not sure which SOHC4 Joe has, but if he has the same petcock I have, I feel bad for him.

I really have no problem with inline filters like a lot of people here seem to. You really do have to make sure that the lines only slope downwards towards the carbs though or you may trap air in the lines and starve the bike for fuel. The fuel filters make this much more difficult to do within the limited space... but not impossible.

Must be a 74, or a tank from that or and earlier Cb500.

I like those, too.  If it fits through that screen mesh, there is nothing to stop it traveling all the way through the carb and out the exhaust pipe.
The screen cleans itself.  Big particles go to bottom of bowl, dropping off the screen above.  It really ought to take quite a while to fill the bowl completely and in the mean time, you will still get full flow through the filter.  In line filters reduce flow as they trap particles, so there will be some odd engine behavior just before they clog completely.  You must check in lines frequently if they are actually doing their job, or replace them at some unspecified routine interval, if their "preventive" nature is to be preserved.

I forgot to check David Spears, but Bike bandit, Z-1, & Honda, only show the type that you described earlier (TwoTired). The bowl that hangs down.

I found that ebay fuel line. If I could locate that tube & screen, I'd ditch the filters and run new line.

Did you guys see that post about these inline filters not liking moisture? The ones with the brass mesh element? I think HondaMan started it?

check here for 7/32" fuel line. they have clear and colored fuel lines.  awhile back I bought a whole bunch of these to offset the shipping price, then shared with other members on the forums.  worked out pretty well

Easy there big fella! My intake filters are failing me constantly. I clean them, check them, clean the tank and I still get crud in the carbs. Over flow drain leaks and a crappy running motor are the symptoms. I had to completely drain and clean my tank every year, take the bowls off the clean them and the pilot jets. This gets old. Once I put inline filters on no problems. I still see the crud that comes from the gas pump in the clear filters, its no wonder our bikes even run with this crap. And no i don't go back to the same pump. Not even the same company.
