Topic: cb 550 air box

Hey guys,

So i ordered a 78 cb550 air-box.  As i'm waiting for the Uni Air Filter NU-4055 to come in the mail, my eagerness has me asking myself questions.  After looking through the air-box, i noticed i could possible be missing parts.  I believe from the picture i'm missing 5 the swing arm and 20 the element.  Is the element piece a another foam filter? and it seems like i can't find anywhere to order the swing arm. is installation possible without it?

The bottom filter is a thin sheet of foam. It helps block fluid (from breather drain) from getting sucked into the filter and carbs.

Item #5 is just a spring clip that provides a bit of force to keep the air filter element pressed against the carb plenum opening in the air box.  You could probably live without it, or you could fabricate a similar piece from a strip of spring steel.

I'm finally sorting things out as far as plugging drain tubes, etc..  but unfortunately  piece 24 (the right angle attachment for the main breather tube) is cut in half at the taper, so i can't properly attach the tube.  Any one get around this piece?  Can't find it on any OEM site.   suggestions for a custom  piece?  I've thought of running it through the bottom drain and plug breather part instead? (disastrous?)   there's a handful of  options im sure..but thought i'd see if anyone has a wiser recommendation or idea.

I connected a continuous length of braided breather hose to the nipple on the air box without using a right angle adaptor, which works great since the hose flexes enough to not kink.  Avoid using the drain nipple as the breather connection, as it creates a low spot in the hose where liquid can collect, possibly blocking it.

As far as the clip goes I just used a piece of wedged cedar shingle cut to size. All the spring does is help keep air from bypassing the filter. Anything that wedges the open side of the filter to the venturi plenum will do the job.
