Cleaning the shop to make room for 750

So I've been rebuilding 550's for a couple years and recently came across 3 750's . One in rebuildable condition , the second is seized and almost complete , the 3rd is seized and very incomplete...but I couldn't pass them up. This means that I will have to shift out of my comfotable 550 mindset and get all that stuff out of the shop to make room for the 750's.
   So while I was having lawn mower trouble and I was in the shop anyways, I found enough time and almost enough parts to rebuild an almost complete 550

but when I realized that I would have to wait to buy some exhaust pipes and stuff I found more stuff and a freshly painted frame and said ,I wonder how far I can take this before I have to stop.
 This past Saturday my wife took off to NYC until today so ,  she left me home alone....I had enough new parts on the shelf to rebuild another 550 engine, and finished it last night. Loaded it in the frame , threw on a fresh set of carbs and other things that were pre polished, just up on the shelf... and so far this is what I came up with. I think the 650 tank will look okay in a different color.

I'll post more when I get a littlt bit further along  on either one of them. 
   There is still 2 frames and 2  seized 550 engines on the bench, I wonder how far I can get with those?

the last pic was bad , maybe this one is better.
  Okay, maybe not. Sorry so shaky.

but all this one needs is a seat , a battery and some pipes but the pic is clear. Oh, and the increasingly hard to get sidecovers. Going to the dutchess county motorcycle show this weekend, hope to find a few pairs.

Iwahples, This garage is only for ongoing projects , parts storage and 1 finished ride and a lawnmower.... that's the only reason there is room to work, the finished projects are stored at a remote location where they are safe from paint overspray and polish dust. I try to take short runs with them on Sundays so they get ridden. And I do miss not having them at home.
 Like everyone else here , I got hooked and outgrew my shop too.

Thanks Matt. I'm trying a different approach to painting this one. I really like that cast iron color that is on my lower ends. This time I rattle canned that color on the fender and headlight, then shot it with a metalflake clear coat. I think the same will happen to the back fender after it is trimmed. The tank deserves a real color ( don't know what yet) and highlighted panels on each side with the cast iron color. I'm thinking maybe the main part of the tank may look good in that caddy white pearl or maybe a gold, but then there is always orange........so many colors,so few tanks. What to do?

So I was looking at the last set set of pipes that were hang on the shelf HM404 Sankei 2024. They polished up nice but ,I snapped 1 pipe at the joint that was weak. I have't put them on any other machine because they look like a PITA to get to the rear axle. looks nice on the semi chop....real long ....a header just would have been wrong on it, though a set of 650 pipes with turn outs would look nice too.
   I never paid much attention to these pipes and didn't realize that they were an actual Honda part and not some crappy aftermarket set up until they were cleaned up . Are these pipes common? Does anyone else run them? Do they sound like anything or is it just so much muffler that they have no real sound?

Not all that rare, I had a good set on my '77.  They were so quiet I didn't like them, sold the bike anyway. 
If in great shape, they might bring good money if someone's looking for original for a restore.

Looking good!  I could probably do the same think with a 750.  So much easier working with what you are most familiar with.

Yeah for sure.always easier working on what we are used to. But it's time to expand my interest.
  I picked up a 750 a few years back, I didn't like it much, ended up cutting the frame , giving the seized engine to a hungry man up the street so he could feed himself from the scrapyard.I saved everything else just in case and still have it. I didn't like the way it felt so top heavy to me at the time ,and at that time I didn't have enough Frankensteining experience to realize that I could make it more to my liking in the shop. Now  I may have enough tricks to make it how I think that I would like it...we'll see. And that doesn't mean that I wouldn't pick up a stray 550 if the price was right. But the 750's have some well known secrets that I am unaccustomed to and am looking forward to some more education on  the classic that changed the world back in '69.

The 550 semi chopped is coming along

All wired up, needs a couple of things...I tossed an old king/queen chopper seat a while back, wish I didn't. I think one would look decent on this.

These are the last 2 left to rebuild, yeah I know, why bother?

but there is 2 lat 550 engines to do, boxes of parts , and onlt a couple of tanks to choose from.
Perhaps I should do a hard boxed cruiser to use up some parts

sissy bars, cowls , and other things I don't like to use. Really feel wasteful not using this stuff.

Filled and sanded out the dings on the 650 tank that I set on the semi chop, painted it cast iron then metal flake clear. I like it allot so far . I had some of those hard to find items that fit in the swing arm shock mount and mount the same shock in a lay down position ,maybe 2 or 2 1/2" back, makes the machine sit so nice.
 I used the wiring harness with pins instead of blades, the kind that Matt ran across with his latest 550 this past fall. Found some nice parts at that dutchess county motorcycle show , still waiting for one of the vendors to e mail me about a K/Q seat, not the touring type, the old school chopper type.
  Cut the rear fender, painted both the steel fender and the plastic inside fender, installed a Lucas rear lamp ...like usual. There are some items that I use allot , like that lamp for instance, because I haven't found another product that I like better, that being the case my machines look very similar to each other. There is a certain comfort in similarity but there is also a frustration that I could have gone wildly different on each machine but opted not to. strange ,isn't it?

Sure do wish I had those pipes, they look a bit nicer than mine.

I like the way you used the cast iron. I am in the process of using it on my build. Hopefully you could answer a question I have yet to ask. I am going to be using it on my tank and I am wondering if the 2K clear will work without baking the cast iron to cure it.

Can't say for sure. I left this tank out in the sun on a blistering day with just the cast Iron color on it, in the evening I took it in to cool off and put the clear on. Seems to be holding up alright so far, we'll see if it holds up when it gets polished .

I used a duplicolor clear with metalflake. Now that it's been dry for a while, the flake is just beautiful, the shine from the clear...I was hoping for better, so I'll wait till I get back to it , clean it up and shoot a few coats of clear coat on all the cast iron and flake parts to give it some depth. Really, I almost never use rattle cans but this stuff did turn out better than I thought  it would. like I said, a couple of clear coats and It would be a decent paint job.

So , in keeping with the origionial idea of cleaning out the shop, I opted to bring the cast iron and the red 550 to the theater for temporary storage as they have all the spare parts available to them , any needed to complete parts will have to be purchased and that isn't what I am trying to accomplish at this time.
   I'm not sure that I mentioned that there are 2 more projects and a sidecar that will require a mess of work but, will use up a bunch of parts and clean this place up alot.
One is a 76 f and the other is a 77 f.... what's left of them. but I do have 2 hopefully rebuildable  engines on the bench.

Took the 2 down to the carwash to get the grease off, like that will make them look much better

But it did reveal rust that will have to be removed before paint, so I'm stripping them down 1 at a time.

 Should be ready for paint after some sand blasting.
 The other F, Matt gave me an idea with his on/off road 550.... but I want to go a step further. There is a  Yamaha motocross bike that is available. nice long travel forks, monoshock bla bla bla. Yeah that's what I'm thinking. Of course my friends want to know what is the matter with me, but they seem to ask regularly anyways.

One more question for you. Did you wet sand the cast iron before you put the clear on? After I painted it the tank has a light layer of dusty residue from the paint. I just don't want to mess it up because it's metallic and I heard you can't sand metallic.

No, I did not wet sand the cast iron or the metallic clear coat. Yes  I have known about not being able to sand metallic paint before so I spray everything the same way, quick cover coats  for coverage and depth and lastly a wet final coat this all happens quickly so there is always a wet line and no overspray because I spray 8 or nine inches away quickly,instead of 12"away, the further away you are ,the more overspray you'll get. not only that but ,depending on the temp., you will most likely end up with an orange peel finish or dust. There is a very fine line that is easily crossed if you don't move quickly,steadily, and uniformly... that is when it puddles or runs.
  If you do or don't have runs and are unhappy with the finish ,wet sand it and spray it over. it's worth the extra $10 to get it the way you want it.
  in my case, I like a high gloss, I like it smooth and glassy,   can't get that from a can  can't really get that from a single stage paint either, but I can shoot a nice clear coat over my tanks with my spray outfit to get it the way I like it  for an additional $30.+- This is a shot of how it is out of a can, I'll shoot it c/c at another time when the shop is clean.

They seem to think that it has something to do with the number of machines, everyone counts when they visit me, which is rediculous,that has never been the point. Most people ask me what make s they are, because one is different than the other  to them, but  they are all the same frame so  to me ,they are so  very similar , but put together differently,and that is the point. But you know that and everyone else here gets it too, maybe I need new friends.

I get those questions too "how many bikes?!"  You need more, new friends that would understand, don't ditch the old ones just cuz they don't.

Tank looks great, BTW.   Oh, and I bought a 550F that came with a sidecar just like yours. Had no room to store it, sold it in one day. Had no idea they are so sought after.

I'm at 50% - 6 of 12 are running. But the 750F cage only on 2 cyl, PO hacked up the wiring good.
