if the bike sat for a while it could be old sludge/oil heating up and dripping away. Remove the cover and that's where the sprocket is. It usually is really dirty back there. I would remove, clean and then see if you have the same problem.

Pretty sure there is but you could reuse that one as it is not an oil seal.

There is a rubber seal in the cover that goes around the shifter shaft, prolly worn.
Easy fix....once you get that cover off.

Number one you shouldn't have oil leaking from that case at all. But it happens because the oil seals and o-rings underneath the cover can dry and crack or shrink and wear out. There is no gasket between the cover and the case.

There are two oil seals to replace, the shifter shaft and the main output shaft. There are two o-rings on the shifter shaft, one inside and one outside the where the shaft goes through the cover. The only oil concern from there should be from the chain. Also there are three o-rings between the oil pump and the case these have a tendancy to leak as well. Once you get the cover off you have access to all of these, you should just change them all at once. This is also a good time to check for wear on the front sprocket. It's not difficult but plan on spending a three or four hours to complete.

Your cover looks in great condition you shouldn't have too much trouble getting the screws out but if you do like Tews said use an impact driver. If you're lucky you can find allen head replacemts for these screws. there is an alignment pin between the cover and the case that can get sticky along with a gummed up o-ring on the shifter shaft can make removing the cover a bear. Once off clean everything up and it makes installing it a breeze. Good luck.

Thanks duanob. Yea I already stripped it so gonna have to cut it off. Of course it's the bottom one when I already had gotten all the rest off without incident. Thanks all for the tips. Where can I get the o-rings/oil seals so I have them before I start the job? And yes the impact driver is on the shopping list for weekend. On vacation next week so hopefully after getting bars on I can start to tackle this job. Thanks everyone ! All help is very much appreciated !

You can just drill the head off and once the cover is off you can work the rest of the screw out with Liquid Wrench or some heat if its really corroded.

91202-KFL-841 (replaces 91202-302-000)

Main output shaft 1X OIL SEAL (33X57X7)
91205-283-015 (replaces 91205-283-010)

As far as the two o-rings for the inside/outside shifter shaft through the cover, I just used some I found in my Harbor Freight kit.

Sometimes the impact will drive the bit deep enough to remove a stripped screw. Get the impact and try that first before you cut off the head.

Btw duanob thanks for the kudos on the cover condition. It was terribly oxidized but after bag or two of 00 and 0000 steel wool it came clean. Earlier in thread you can see the pics of before and after.

So I left out a small tidbit bout my great ride yesterday. As I pulled back into my street the bike started sputtering and farting and died. I checked the tank and I was close to empty. I switched to reserve and couldn't get started again. So I got gas last night and put it in tonight. Wouldn't turn over! Ugh ended up draining battery so it's on charger til tmrw. If I starved it for gas do I need to do anything to get it back in order? Like I said it ran like a champ for 40+ miles of hard riding. Thanks guys.

Ok. Pretty sure the tank is clean. But sounds like putting an inline filter on the fuel line is a good idea. Heading to work now and will give it s shot tonight

Actually, there has been a lot of debate about it. Fuel filters have been known to cause fuel flow issues.
I bought a bike that had running issues with inline filters and removed them, bike ran great afterword.

I'm starting to believe in inline filters. I don't think the intank sock filter is good enough anymore. I've had too much fine crap in the carb bowls, float jets, pilot jets, etc. I cleaned my tank last winter and cleaned the fuel tap, filter sock and the bowls and after a couple of months of riding I still find crud.

You might drain the bowls and look for crud. If you switch to reserve any fine silt and dirt that was sitting in the bottom of the tank can make its way to your carbs.

I ran an in-line filter (the Mr. Gasket glass kind with the replaceable element) in my prior 550 and had no issues with fuel delivery.

Went out late last night. Like 330 late. Then worked like dog all day. So didn't get to the bike tonight. Puttin on flick and passing out. Tmrw I conquer the starting issue and take it for a nice ride.
