Lawsuits and liability aside, many jurisdictions make a crime of "Failure to Stop and Render Aid". It usually used for hit-and-runs, but can be applied wider. Depending on the circumstances it can be a heavy misdemeanor or a felony.

I keep that in mind whenever I see some bad #$%* on the road.

I believe in France it's an offence not to stop and help if there has been an accident. Strikes me as a very civilised law. You don't know the character and mentality of the victim or any number of other variables - you only know that he may require help. You aren't going to be able to determine that unless you stop and ask.

what if it appears someone else has already stopped to aid the injured/wrecked person? is it okay to move along then?

sheesh...you could end up with all kinds of lawsuits off of that one...but that's just my Yank brain working - we are a litigious society, you know...

In Germany they stage fake automobile accidents usually with a car off the road overturned and dummies or live accident victim"corpses" laying around. It`s mostly done on out of the way back roads with a camera set up to take pictures of you and your plate , if you look and noticeably see the accident and don`t stop then you will lose your drivers license for a period of time.

That seems just a tad harsh. But then again, what if it was a real accident and no one else was there and a person just drove by? Hmmmmmmmmmmmm?

Isn't there a "Good Samaritan Law" in NY?  Anybody live in NY know about this?
