have not been on this site in 2 years, I am currently helping a friend with a cb750...great thread and ambitious build...

Just a question if you ever were going to do this again would you consider having a custom made frame made? Made specifically for the GSXR front end and a wide rear tire? I miss the sound and the feel of my old honda 550 engine, but i love a modern ride.

Since I got rid of the honda I have had 2 Triumphs I had the Thruxton but its just like a old cb...I spent alot of money on suspension and engine upgrades but something was missing. I moved to a Street Triple 675 and OMG its awesome.

Anyways I love your vision and your thread has been a great read

No offense intended, but I think that a custom made frame (to accept the GSXR front and rear) defeats the purpose of many of these modern front end swap builds.  The bike is intended to retain the frame (and title from that frame) and to modernize and improve the front end braking and handling via a relatively easy swap.  If you want a custom modern bike frame, why even stick with the old engine?  For my work in progress 750 with a modern CBR600RR front, I wanted to retain some of the vintage character with the frame and engine.

I agree, but i would be curious to try it. An honestly i dont think your keeping the integrity of the bike by putting a gsxr. front end on the bike, and hacking the rear fender and frame. Im thinking of the possibilty,  these vintage honda engines are amazing

It's not about keeping the "integrity" of the bike, but as I said "some of the character."  With all due respect, if this was about keeping the "integrity" of the bike, we would not be discussing a cafe or restomod.  We'd be talking about a restoration or survivor style bike.

The 550 engine in stock form is not terribly potent, but the bike is light enough to make it fun.  If you haven't seen it already, check out the Thorn built by Ian Halcott and Twinline.  A punched out Kawasaki 550 twin motor mounted into a braced 550 frame.  A light, nimble little track bike.  Braced like hell, because these CB frames flex A LOT.

I'm sure you could put a 550 motor into another frame, but at that point, why?  There are much more capable power plants available.

Just my $0.02.  If you don't like my opinion, that's perfectly fine.

No hijack guys. CB550 and I go way back from when I was first.on the site.

Glad to see you stop by CB550.... I had a stupid thought less then a month ago. I almost traded my K1 in for a new Thruxton. But after the test ride I decided not worth it. I bought my K1 for 800... Why spend 10k after all said and done for a modern bike that in my opinion wasn't up to par of my 750.

Anyways the cut up frame has been put on hold for a 650 build. Hopefully I will get the new frame back from the powder coater this week. I also have a big purchase coming up.

You apparently have not seen what Brent has been able to accomplish with some head work and a six speed transmission fitted to his 550 race bike. He is cranking out some pretty impressive numbers in hp and torque for the little 550 powerplant.

Quick question.... I am a vinegar fan when cleaning parts off of rust. What should I use for the engine mounting bolts? My goal is to have a roller the day I get the frame back...Also what should I spray bomb them with to stop the rusting process? .

Evaporust is the best so far from what I can tell, especially if you're on a deadline. Its pricey though. Have the long bolts zinc'd if you can, the paint might scratch off when pushing them through and start rusting again...

Cal PM coming. I won't use evaporust anymore. I bought it when I first joined the site. Imo vinegar works better.  It only takes longer.

cb550,

Sorry my retort came off snippy. Not my intent. I too was interpreting custom frame like Cal. IMHO, frame mods, especially bracing for a modded motor are all good. Personally, I would not go through the cost of a custom fabbed ground up frame just to put a 550 motor into it. If you go that far, you ought to put more bang into it. From your post reference, that's not what you meant.

PS Big performance gains can be obtained from the 550 motor (see bwaller and paulages). Of these, I'm leaning toward a future 650 big bore in a 550 frame build.

Well I picked up my parts from the PC. I installed the engine today. Put new races in the steering stem. Now she is stuck outside the laundry/ bike shop room..... Until tomorrow. I need to call up Western Hills for the rubber bushings in the swing arm.....

PC is powder coater?  Nothing like fresh powder coat. Did yours do a good job of keeping PC away from surfaces where you didn't want it? Mine did not but an hour with a dremel I was able to clear out what I didn't want.  You're at a fun stage with your build. It should develop quickly from here. Cheers.

Thanks guys! I had some help and now she is in the garage. I ordered new bronze bushings and the rubber bushings for the swing arm but wanted to mock it up. Height will need to be adjusted but you get the jist...before I sent the parts off to the PC I decided not to hack up the frame and left the tabs. I plan to run side covers. I'm set on my color thanks to seeing a new Goldwing the other day. Paint will most likely wait till next year as the cost will make me hold off.

Is that the HF MC lift? How well does it work? It was down to $80 plus I had another coupon last week but didn't know how good it was so I passed. If it can hold up a 550, I guess 750 would have made it too? Kicking myself now  >:(
