K1/K2 Speedo parts interchangeability
« on: September 22, 2012, 02:14:03 AM »
I've done a search but couldn't find the relevant information on this subject. If I have missed something I apologise.

My bike is a CB750 K1 & while I'm waiting for my new gauge faces to arrive I thought I would check the speedo (MPH) & tacho. The tacho is o.k. but the speedo isn't working properly. I have a good K2 speedo (MPH) and I assume the mechanism from the K2 speedo will fit the K1 unit.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

And while I'm making decisions, I also have a good metric speedo (KPH) - would the mechanism from that fit my K1 unit? If it will I'll probably use that but I don't want to dismantle a good speedo to find out I can't use the parts.

Hopefully someone will know.

Hi Brookesy,

...K1 MPH<->KMH should be the same only the odometer has different sprockets.
You can swap the face plate and it will read correct in MPH or KMH only the odometer will get You data that do not match to the face plate.

Have to take a look, I am thinking that there was a difference between K1 and K2 mechanic but not sure right now.

Good luck...Georg

Thanks Georg,

It does look different. Damn.
I will have to disassemble the speedo and see what the problem is and find if it's repairable.

The speedo/tach outside bodies changed in the early K2 bikes, when the "rhino horn" top triple tree changed to the type that used a separate sheet metal bracket to mount the instruments, which in turn bolted into 2 holes in the [new] top tree. Other than that, and the lack of indicator lamps inside the instruments after K1, the internal parts were very similar until the K5.

Thanks Hondaman,

I've ordered your book. I have the Wyatt, Haycock & Duckworth books too.

Looks like I won't know for sure until I pull them apart, see what I've got & give it a go.
I'll take photos and post my findings

There is a difference between the US gauges and non-US gauges. The internal parts of US K1 and K2 speedos are interchangeable. Non-US speedos changed in 73/74 but still with the "rhino horn" top triple tree until 75. These later K2 non-US speedos are too different from the early K1 and K2 speedos

The K2 has the tripometer over the odometer. Same as the K1.

I believe it changed on the 73 K3.

That changed on the K6. The K3-K5 have the ODO in the lower half. The K6 km/h speedo still has the ODO in the lower half

Was the Netherlands like Australia? Did they con, tinge with the K2 past 1972?

I believe I have at least 2 speedos from 1974 models with the trip meter on the bottom.

Just curious

I have restored many K0-K5 gauges and these all had the ODO on the bottom. I think that that changed in 1975 with the CB750F.
