has anyone made/fabbed their own? if so, what did you make it out of and where did you mount it?

I haven't made one but it would be very easy to do.   I would use 1/8" aluminum plate (since I have lots on hand & you can polish it if you are so inclined).

Trace the shape of the license plate on the aluminum and then draw on an extra section for a mounting tab to the bike.  Cut out shape, drill mounting hole in tab, drill holes to mount license plate, bend tab at a 90 degree angle to the plate.  You can mount it to the top or bottom shock mount.

I like my plate mounts to make a full back plate for the license plate as I think it looks a little nicer so that's why I use aluminum plate.  If you don't care about that you could just use a strip of band iron bent & drilled to mount on the shock mount.

You may want another tab above the plate to mount a plate light.

Make sense?

Now that I think about it my chopper actually had a side mounted plate when I bought it.   It was just made out of a piece of band iron that was welded to the frame down by the rear axle.  The first week I had the bike I probably tripped over that stupid thing 1/2 a dozen times  >:( (The plate was mounted horizontally and we have fairly large plates here).

The hacksaw came out after +/- time #6 (slow learner.....)

i've made a few. one i made from stainless sheet. it was like stevie described. just cut the shape and bent. then i made two from some stainless rod. i used a nut to go over teh shock mount and bent teh rod to the shape i wanted then welded it together and welded a piece of sheet metal on for the plate to atatch to. poor description. look at the pic

STLrocker,

I dig that dude!  Nice idea with the rod.  Looks cool and very original.  Well done.

I just took a old stopsign (I have lots of signs on my garage that I have "accquired" over the years) and cut out a simple plate mount, and curved the top for the LED strip. Made a "L" Bracket and mounted it off the bottom shock mount bolt. Nice and simple..

I had a cateye on their before, but I got sick of it.
Gonna revise it once again over the winter, with some lights I picked up here at work that are sick ass bright.
