First Honda
« on: June 17, 2013, 07:23:26 AM »
Just picked up my first one. Traded a '72 Yamaha DS7 for a '74 CB550.
Bike looks incredibly clean for sitting in a garage for 20 years. Don't know when it was last ridden but the tank is rust free with no corrosion anywhere on the bike.

It looks like the original owner removed the ignition and installed some goofy on off switch as well as cut off the hump on the rear of the frame.

I figure since the frame has already been cut I should probably just turn it into a cafe racer.

Problems I've found so far...
Wiring is screwy due to the rewired ignition.
Carbs slides are completely seized.
Read some tricks for unsticking the carbs so hopefully an overnight soak will work.

Welcome.

Try a heat gun on the slides. Sometimes it's just enough.

Welcome, this is by far one of the best vehicle forums on the web (I belong to half a dozen).

Sounds like the PO (prior owner) was planning a cafe or bobber conversion.

Our montra here is "pictures or it didn't happen', so include them as often as you can

Will post pictures tomorrow!
I do have a question

While pulling apart the bike last night I found something I've never seen before.
It was mounted under and behind the headlight and looked almost like a speaker.
Small about an inch or so in diameter.
Any ideas...?

I would love to post pictures but cant quite yet...

Freed up my carbs today and scored an whole set for backup for 30 bucks!

Waiting on my rebuild kits to put them back on

Cut off my seat bracket so I can mount a flat Brat style seat.  Now I just need to grind down all the ugly leftovers.

Sprayed engine down with degreaser and gave it a clean

And I ordered all my parts to get her back on the road.

I want to take out the battery box and remount all the electrical goodies.  Anyone have any pictures of what they have done?  Definitely going to an antigravity battery but have no idea which one I should get.

Does anyone have any ideas for battery mount and electrical boxes

carbs rebuild kit......all you need are rubber pieces, clean off your hardware bits and reuse those, if they were original.
