78 CB750a kickstarter suddenly stuck?
« on: July 02, 2013, 03:47:30 PM »
I recently picked up a 78 cb750a, and only paid $300 for it. It has several problems, but it was mostly together, and they were mostly electrical problems. Thanks to a lot of great posts on this forum, I've got it almost ready to see if it fires up, but now I've got another problem.
Suddenly, it seems like, the kickstarter is stuck. Before I purchased the bike, I made sure to kick it and make sure it turned over and the motor wasn't frozen, but not it won't move at all. I haven't touched the internals, chain, brakes, anything mechanical, really. I've just been fixing the wiring and I cleaned the carbs and put them on. I don't know exactly how this parking brake and automatic system works though. Is there a certain checklist I have to make sure is in order before I can kick it over? Is there something different than your standard manual-shift motorcycle?
Thanks in advance for all of your help.

Well after messing with it some more, it turns out it was just the actual motor getting stuck in place from not being turned for a while.  ::) Looks like I've got a bit more work to do. Thanks for anyone that took a look at it though. I guess this can just be closed now.

Glad you worked it out.  I did look around, but couldn't find anything to offer . . . .

Do you have an owner's manual?  Could download on this site, if you don't.

Does the engine turn over freely with the plugs removed?  Have you tried to spin it over with the starter?  When I was bringing my $300 barn find back to life, I used a battery charger/booster to spin the starter motor over (connected directly to ground and at the starter solenoid).
