Front wheel wobble
« on: June 21, 2013, 06:07:30 PM »
Hey guys,
This'll be my first post. I recently acquired a 1974 cb550. I've got it running great. I have however noticed a slight wobble in the front end and realized the front wheel isn't true. My experience with spoked wheels is very limited but I was wondering if its possible to true up the front wheel without removing the tire.
Thanks

I think you can but first look and see if it is the wheel or tire. Could it be the tire is not seated good all the way around? You could rig up a crude indicator with a coat hanger.

I have the same issue, however mine is caused by a slight divit in the rim itself. I have been up to 90mph without issue. I will be replacing eventually but for now it'll do.

there's a good write up in the FAQ for truing with the tire on. it is far easier to do it with them off, however. you could have your local shop dismount the tire for you, and you can take the rim home and work on until you've gone totally nuts ;D.

i've done both and the latter was more successful. for the tire on method i used a microphone stand with a piece of chalk taped to it.

There are a number of things that could cause a wobble in the front end, I would not be riding it until i had checked the wheel bearings, steering head bearings, all the appropriate spacers, brakes  and the wheel for out of round... All of which could quite easily spit you off down the road.....

If You can't fix it with a hammer, You've got an electrical problem.
