Fellow CB musicians
« on: August 04, 2006, 12:06:44 PM »
Since the "possible purchase" post has been hopelessly derailed by musician talk I thought I would start a new thread on the subject.

Myself, I played drums in a few bands in my late teens and early 20s.  Then I got tired of the band scene and was living in an apartment which meant no drum playing.  I still wanted to play music so I bought a bass.  When I'm not playing motorcycle, I still pull the bass out (mostly in winter) and go down to my basement to play along with a few records for kicks.

To answer mlinder's q's from the other post:

Hey, I'ma  vocalist.. and a guitar player... and bass...
What makes vocalists so bad??

All in good fun I promise  ;D  but this is just my experience...

First, if you play an instrument (other than vocals) I don't count you in the same class; no lead singer disease (LSD).

LSD Problem #1: they don't seem to understand that they need to practice their parts of the songs and know the lyrics before they get to practice/gigs just like the rest of the band.

Problem#2:  singing in the band seems to be little more than just an easy way to get girls, so once you have sung enough to impress some girl you have your eye on, singing no longer matters.   Feel free to just leave rehearsal or goof off for the rest of the show if you like.  The rest of us won't mind.  Really  ::)

This is just my limited experience mind you.  I have met a few singers that were very professional but most were not.

Hey, what do you call a guy who hangs out with a bunch of musicians?

A drummer!  Duh  ;) ;D

Nearing completion on our first full length, 15 song album. should be done end of october.

I don't think many of you will like the music. Dosn't hurt my feelings though, I'm used to it :P

Wow, The Dowshifters.  Dude, I've been meaning to check your stuff out for ages, it just kept slipping my mind.  I've seen the name on the HCBF bass forum countless times it seems.  I just hit your website and checked it out.  Great tunes dude.  It's been added to my must have list.

Cheers,

No, no, it's not that I don't like it.  It's uuummm, well, kind of hard to describe.  It's just music that needs the right setting (for me at least)

I wouldn't put it on at parties perhaps, but on a long drive at night...... I'd say it would be perfect.   I'm not shining you, I would listen to that but the mood and setting would just have to be right.

Awe, you guys put me to shame! Coming of age in Kalamazoo, I was exposed to a lot of music, so I guess I'm mostly a wannabe...
I did know a lot of musicians though...One of my room mates was in a band with Michael Walden from Kalamazoo, former drummer with Mahavishnu Orchestra, and another room mate was the original Drummer with REO Speedwagon, The kid across the street was an equipment repairmanspecializing in keyboards working for a company called The Sound Factory. He toured with Emerson Lake and Palmer for 2 years in the '70s maintaining Kieth Emersons keyboards. My little sister went out with a Bass player named Paul Keller (now in Ann Arbor) Who toured with Diana Krall, then settled down in Ann Arbor with The Bird of Paradise Orchestra, and now the Paul Keller Trio.
I think your comment about "LSD" is hilarious and true...In college, I had a Lead singer from my Room Mates Band who was constantly after me.......Until I ran sound for the band one night....I screwed up, and never heard from her again!
Another time, another Bass player had his Fender Jazz fall apart on stage. I got an emergency call, and ran out there with my old Epiphone. I gave it to him and he sounded great. I heard later, his comment was: Oh no! I had one of these in 7th grade!

Guitar. Haven't had a band in a long time, when you like metal (real metal not radio metal) it's hard to find others who A:) Like the same stuff that you do. B:) Are good enough to play said music. Also good drummers are hard to find. It's either the dip#$%* who doesn't know how to play anything but blast beats, or the guy who can't play them at all! Ok. I'm done ranting.  ;D

Well, as i said on the other thread, I play lots of things. Actually trumpet is probably my forte (pun intended ::) ). At least it was when I played on a regular basis. Drums would be next, then guitar, piano, vibra-slap, etc. I've come to realize that I don't have the creative ability to be a musician though. I can emulate a lot of things but can't come up with anything original. I think I'd like to work the recording side better because I have a good ear and I know how music should sound. Gonna get my friend to show me the ropes.

mlinder: I like your music! It's the kind I love to sit in a dark room and listen to.

Slapguts: Finally your name makes sense! (OK, I'm slow ::) ). Love the sound of a stand up bass. Good job!

A lot of bass players here. No wonder y'all make fun of drummers! Anybody ever heard "Bass Talk" on Bob and Tom?

I'm an old phart.
My best music is shifting up through the gears on my K0 that has the mildly baffled unstamped pipes, not going straight onto the throttle, and enjoying the harmonics..

That reminds me of one of the funniest experiences I've had with music- the last band I was in went through a period of time where we were constantly interviewing drummers.  Two of the most interesting people that auditioned were as follows:

1)  Young "kid", maybe 17-19 years old, comes in and has a cocky attitude from the get-go.  Is wearing a shirt that is a button down, with only the very bottom buttoned- I'm thinking, why bother?  Or, wouldn't a tee-shirt be much more comfortable?  This guy smelled of BO so bad, it followed him around like a terrible stink cloud.  Anyway, we start the audition (of which this dude has already had a cd of our music for a week to work on)..  He is absolutely TERRIBLE- I mean, not only was he not playing the drum parts at all, but he was not even close to being on time!  Instead, it was more like every song he just played an extremely loud, fast, and extra-terrible drum solo.  Then at the end of the audition, he asked us when he could start.  We told him we had other people to consider (being polite!), and he says "you guys aren't my style of music anyway- I'm outta here!"

2)  Crazy older dude..  We play rock, and are in our early 30's.  This guy comes in, is like in his late 50s, has crazy twisted sister hair, brings some chick to the audition who just sat in the corner and didn't say jack to anyone.  He was a last minute audition, and hadn't had the luxury of getting our music CD in advance, so we told him we'd play each song for him in advance, and then he could play that song, etc.  He'd listed to the CD for like 5 seconds, then stand up and tell us he had to get a smoke and make a quick phone call.  Then he'd come back in, and he'd play the song perfectly, without really hearing the CD!  He was clearly talented, but he has insane scheduling issues.  Oh well, he was a character.

Toycollector - you and me both! My work car's glovebox is full of Beatles CDs and anything from the 70's - there's something about that era, or is it just old pharts like us wishing we were still there?? I own 2 x 70's cars and 2 x 70's bikes, and people tell me that I even still dress like I'm in the 70s - now that's not intentional so is a bit sad!! But the best music of all is the K2, and I think it's time to run it without the baffles and let the whole neighborhood no I'm having fun.
I'm an old drummer from wayback, but haven't had a bash for a long time, so would probably embarrass myself big time. Leave it for some steering wheel bashing and tapping out on the road with Abbey Road Side 2 vibrating the windows and door trims. Anyway, playing in bands wasn't for me - got sick of all the chickies clawing and throwing underwear and stuff at me - ha ha  ;)
I was in Unzud last year and spent some time in your town (beautiful) - we hope to revisit next year so I will be sure to look you up and we can share some good old days memories and music, and sit in your shed and just let the K0 idle. Aaaahhhhh.
Ride on.  ;D

WOO HOO! a fellow sludge pumper. I'm mainly a Eupho player myself. Learned as a kid in the Salvation Army. Still playing there and in the local town brass band. Have played bass trombone in a few bands. tenor in a jazz/dixieland band occasionally for fun. Thinking of gettin an old bashed  playable sousa for that.

Used to play Drums in a band years ago. Now just jam with my sons who play piano and guitar.

Sludge pumper, have not heard that one in a while.

The bigband is my second job. For fun I play drums mainly at home because I am not good enough to play in a professional band. I started when I was 10 or so on trumpet.
