no oil pressure after rebuild
« on: August 06, 2006, 09:51:43 AM »
I am restoring a CB 750 k-1,  Original motor has 14,000 miles and a cracked case.  When I purchased the motor (not running, basket case) I did not know about the cracked case.  Someone had lost a chain and used fiber glass to stop the resulting leak.  Anyways, I tore it down, new rings and valves and gaskets.  Left old bearings, as they were all well with-in specs. When fired it up for a few seconds, started right up.  But I don't seem to have oil pressure.  I pulled filter housing, and no oil in there.  Dropped oil pump and had oil there.  replaced oil pump with another I had, and now oil pumps out of oil filter passage when cranked with no plugs.  Put it all back to gether and still no pressure.  I pulled the plug out of the oil gallery, and can feel oil there, but now pressure when cranked.  Question, shouldn't i be able to crank up enough oil pressure with just the starter motor, no plugs, or do I need to start it up to get enough pressure? Seems to me I should be blowing my finger out of the gallery hole with just the starter.
Also I am doing these checks with out the oil filter in, just the housing.  Don't thing that should make a difference but thought I'd throw it in.

Trying to get my 750 on the road again after 22 yrs in storage, I too was concerned about oil pressure/flow. I was able to get the oil light to go out after several seconds of cranking with the starter, fully charged battery and plugs out.
We'll all be someone else's PO some day.

Well, I took a chance, put the plugs in tank on and started it up.  took a couple of seconds of running to get it to fire on all four, but finally got enough gas to start.  I was just getting ready to shut it down, when the oil light went out.  About 5 seconds of running.  Now starts with a touch of the starter, oil light goes out immediately.  Sounds great!!!.  Now need my wheels back from the tire shop and I'll be riding.   :D ;D
