Main jet orings rotted/not sealing
« on: July 01, 2013, 10:34:55 PM »
Think my main jets on my cb550 aren't sealing too well... Orings are shot an want to fall out... Thinking its effecting the mixture a bit.... Is there any effective/non costly way to replace these?

ive found a local diesel injector and pump service place that has any and all o rings copper washers etc,a plain hardware store might not have the odd ball metric sizes so small?

Not that I have found.  The plumbing dept. sells stuff that can withstand water, like natural rubber, etc.  It's cheaper to make but doesn't have very good petroleum resistance.
If you can determine what the oring is made of at the store, then you might use what is there.  Metric sizes aren't common in many hardware stores.
What you want is Viton for use with ethanol fuels.  Nitrile or Buna-n was common for gasoline exposure before the ethanol contamination.  But, it doesn't stand up well to ethanol.

Perhaps this may help.

This seems good....

I believe that material was what was used originally, back in the 70s and 80s.  If you can avoid ethanol gas, it will work well.

You may wish to check this chart for material suitability.  Compare solvent resistance (ethanol) between the two materials.  You'll see that Viton is the better choice using today's fuels, whereas Buna-N was fine beforehand with just petroleum exposure.

Autozone in the Help! section has a package of viton o-rings that are the right size for main jet o-rings. Only two in the pack you would need so you would have to get two. Cheap and easy to get ahold of tho

My Oreillys auto has a huge selection of metric o rings in a case behind the counter.  Just take your jet in and find one that fits..
