Yes. I had a 72 500/4 and a 74 550/4 at the same time and there was virtually no part that could not be swapped back and forth.

Can I have a motorcycle when I get old enough?
If you take care of it.
What do you have to do?
Lot’s of things. You’ve been watching me.
Will you show me all of them?
Sure.
Is it hard?
Not if you have the right attitudes. It’s having the right attitudes that’s hard.

You can compare part numbers...

That won't do you any good; as the petcocks and tanks are different. But the tank mounts the same; and the fuel delivery hoses hook up the same. I have one of each tank for my CB500, and I'm leaning toward the CB550 tank/petcock, but it has more dents than my 500 tank...   ::)

Yes, they are interchangeable.

I have a 500 tank on my 550.

But there is a length difference.
The 500 tank is about 1 1/2 inches shorter.
But the mounts are the same.

The 500/4 in my avatar had a 550K34 tank. But as mentioned below, the tank is longer and wouldn't fit with the 500 seat.  I bought a 550 seat and they matched up well - other than the 550 seat hinges were in a different place from the mounts on the 500 frame.

Steve and Caferacer550 - are you quite sure a CB550K tank won't fit on a CB500?? Maybe it is the CB550F tank that is different length?? I know they look different (gas filler; emblem attachment); maybe they and their seats are only swappable between the same model??

I have two CB500 tanks and one CB550K tank; they measure the same. I get 18" from the inside rear of the front tank mount to the rear edge of the rear tank mount; and 19 1/4" measured along the top of the tank from the front tunnel edge to the rear edge. I only used a carpenters tape measure; and only one tank has trim, but those numbers should be pretty close.

One of my tanks is a NOS dealer shelf queen; one dent from a dropped tool. Not too bad, but HTH do you pull out a dent??

DSS has a NOS 500 tank for £395. At that rate, you should get your dent pulled by a professional!

... :o :o :o...Is it platinum or just gold???...   ::)

My buddy tried welding a nut onto a dent in an old tank, pulling it with a long bolt...he says it worked OK...just grind the nut off when done...and repaint...

I expect to have to paint; but welding on a gas tank (aside from the Singed Eyebrow factor) seems like I would be burning off any of Honda's anti-rust coating that may be inside the tank...   :-\

...assuming they put any anti-rust compound on the inside of the tank...   ;D

You are kidding of course.  This is 1972 we are talking about.   ;D

The best anti-rust coating I have found for my 34 year old tank is to leave it full of petrol (gas) !!

It's gold, well Candy Baccus Olive actually.

Colour anyway.

http://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/cgi-bin/dss2-cgi/ProdSel.pl?cat=1%20Genuine%20Spares|CB500%20FOUR%20K0/K1/K2|CB500K0/K1/K2%20:%20Fuel%20tank%20in%20Candy%20Baccus%20Olive/Black%20(K2)

I was quoted £400 for a professional respray so maybe that price isn't outrageous for a NOS tank.

Last NOS tank I saw on ebay hit nearly $400 and i paid $300 for one 18 months ago so that DSS price is probably OK for a resto, Candy Bachus Olive was never a UK colour it was a 1973 US colour and acording to the buletin I have is obtained by spraying Candy Gold over a metallic Blue base
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Remember "Its always in the last place you look" COURSE IT IS YOU STOP LOOKIN THEN!
