first cb550....help me get her road ready!!!
« on: June 23, 2013, 06:13:50 PM »
this pic was from this morning....as of now the frame is completely bare

a little into this bike

Has sat for years, obviously neglected.

I'm going for a semi cafe look.

Removing rear fender, stock bars, repainting tank, painting frame, front forks have rust, keeping stock seat and recovering, exhaust mufflers are shot but i think i can re-use mufflers, i want to paint them all black and run 4 mufflers with stock pipes.

The engine on her had top end torn down

The spare engine, complete, that came with her has also sat for years, with a little oil in each cylinder she compression tested at 50-60 psi on each cylinder cold.

The carbs had some corrosion but I THINK i got them rebuilt to run

so now for questions???

what type mufflers could i put on each pipe that will allow me to keep stock jets?

my wheels have lots of rust on spokes...anyone ever blasted them and painted them black?  then polished the outter wheel/inner wheel?

My front forks also have lots of rust on upper chrome parts, i'm also thinking blast them, polish the aluminum lower portions and black out the rusty chrome

then fork gators or dust covers, any aftermarket or other options for stock gators?

last and not least, my rear shocks are also pretty rusted, any options for cheaper replacments for those?

thanks ahead of time

-josh

i will continue posting pics as i go
i'd rather be sailing

If your fork tubes are rusty and pitted where they travel, you'll need to replace them or they'll just chew up the fork seals.  There are a variety of aftermarket shocks available.   Just use Google/eBay.   You can sand the spokes and paint them, no prob if they are sturdy.

The tubes are not rusty just the chrome slide covers at the top that also hold the headlight bucket.

i've had her completely torn down a week now and the re-assembly has begun

frame all torn down, bead blasted, re-painted and now being put back together.

Engine also painted.

I've ordered most of the known parts i need to restore/bring back to life...in my newly chosen style

drag handle bars
new fork gators OEM reproduction
new rear shocks
new front brake pads with caliper rebuild kit
needles/seats/bowl gaskets for carbs
side covers
sealed battery
new oil filter, GTX motorcycle oil
new plugs
seat dropped off to be reupholstered
ordered new ignition switch with key

items waiting to order as soon as the little lady gives me my allowance next week

tires
SS braided brake line cable
possible master cylinder rebuild kit
drop of tank to be powder coated (getting dent smoothed over with lab-metal and jb weld is a PITA)
order spare carb body from another member here just incase mine decides to crap on me
finish painting my rear rim
order new speedo and tach
possibly exhaust/mufflers if my open pipes are too loud
get drill bits to take my main/pilot jet up a possible two sizes
order pod filters (i know most of you hate pods...but i run a small engine/carb shop/machine shop...if anyone can get them to run properly it would be me) besides i'm missing everything from the first air collector box back and no one on here seems to be selling them
order LED taillight/plate holder
order led turn signals
led flasher relay
cut front fender down and paint
bar end mirrors
new grips
speedo cable
possibly clutch cable
