Suspension upgrade recommendations? CB750
« on: June 23, 2013, 07:53:54 PM »
My 78 CB 750 feels pretty tired in the suspension department. I own multiple bikes, so I'm not really looking for sportbike performance or touring comfort, just a recommendation for a set of decent shocks and fork springs to put some life back into the old girl.

Go read the thoughts of Hondaman in the FAQ section.  I am sure there are a lot of opinions but I have been happy with all the mods that I have done that he recommended.

I have been very happy with Progressive Springs (heavy duty) on my K4 - have them front/rear.

Thanks, I have Progressives front and Hagons back on my Rocket Touring, but I didn't know if they even made them for an old Honda like mine.

I went a little different direction than most here.  I went with Sonic strait rate springs up front and a set of Hagons on the rear.

This is exactly what I have on my K2. Sonic Springs were 1.0kg, Hagons were the 2810 shocks with adjustable dampening.

Weird summit called me last night about my order.  Stated the shipping was off and that I would have today..... well ups dropped them off 20 min ago. Curious did all of you use the spacers provided? If so did you out over the washer and they stick out further then the tube?

yes, I inserted the washer and then the spacer.
not enough preload without them, and my forks nearly bottomed out without.

I contacted progressive. They had me measure. They told me to cut one spacer in half and use for both. Front end still feels spongy but it was almost impossible to use the entire spacer for one fork.

Did you cut in half as progressive recommended?

nope.  i used the whole spacer.  30mm IIRC.  compressed it with my ratchet and the fork cap and screwed it in using my 6'5"  leverage ;D
followed the small sheet of directions indicating the top of the springs should be below the deepest thread, so thats what i did.
still feels a bit soft to me  :-\

I've enjoyed using large stacked up flat washers as spacers w/ much success.

That sounds very adjustable.

I'm thinking very seriously about cycle-X lowering kit for my 78 I just can't stand this tipy toe any longer. Makes it tough moving it around in the shop. Has anyone with a 78 tried it with the Progressive springs?

Hmm, not hearing good about the Progressives here, truth be told I am not that impressed on my Rocket either, how are the Sonics, those who have them. (this is exactly why I asked for recommendations.)

look into gold valves for the forks. I think racetech sells them.

I took the progressives for a quick ride around my neighborhood. I noticed the front wasn't jumping all over and i could lean more into the corners. Tomorrow if the rain lets up I will give an update.

One thing I noticed is that the front end seems higher.

The Progressives were an improvement over stock on my Rocket, but I expected a huge difference, maybe I'm expecting too much, after all,  it isn't a sport bike.

Hmm, not hearing good about the Progressives here,

Not from me I really like the front progressives on my K4 - and have them on the rear as well. Used them for the last 40,000 miles and couldnt be happier. So far I have found the straight springs to be a little stiffer (same 10w oil) but dont have enough mileage on them to compare. Old forks are old forks though ;)

Not sure I understand, do you mean you have Progressive non-progressive shocks? (straight springs)

I would recommend to anyone that is doing suspension work on a new or old bike to pick up a copy of "Race Tech's Motorcycle Suspension Bible". I am not promoting Race Tech or anyone else but this book has a lot of information that will apply to all of the bikes you own.

Sorry I have 2 bikes - CB750K4 with Progressive springs; CB750K2 with straight springs.

Sorry for the confusion.
