How many days to ride 2000mi?
« on: July 07, 2013, 10:24:38 PM »
I guess the title says it, If a guy thought he was a badass and on a nice running 750 how far is it practical to ride in a day?  Just thinking about going to the surf guitar convention and taking that trip I never took way back when. Probable a pipe dream but what if?

Do yourself a favor at set aside the whole "badass" thing.  If you are thinking about taking "the trip you always wanted to take" why rush it and turn it into an endurance trip?  I have taken several 2000+ trips and one 6000 mile trip.  I have never done more than 650 miles in a day and those were days when all I was doing was making distance across uninteresting terrain like the Dakotas, etc.  To make more miles than that in a day you have to travel the interstate freeways at high speed and that IMO is just not fun. I keep my time on the superslabs to a minumum...it's just boring. I like to stop at funky little taverns/bars for a beer...anyone been in the New Atlas Bar in Columbus MT or the Two Dot Bar in Two Dot MT? You will often find someone to talk to in a small town cafe in some out of the way town, I always did.  When you travel alone people find you more approachable and they will often be curious and open.  Camping will cut into miles made vs motel stays too (I always camped).  I make frequent photo stops too so that always cuts into the miles made...but that's what I do it for, to have a fun and interesting time and meet people.
I gave up merit badges after boy scouts so the idea of riding 1000 miles for a badge doesn't impress me in the least......all I would think is poor guy, what fun and interesting things did you miss out on.  I always thought making a 6000 mile trip on a Japanese Vibrator (XS650) was "badass" enough. ;D ;D ;D
So Don....all I can say is don't rush it.  If it may be a one time oppurtunnity plan an intersting route...take your time...and stay off the interstates as much as possible.

I rode with my brother,(he was on a Kawasaki Concours), from Petoskey, Mi to the far end of Door County,(the peninsula)above Green Bay, Wisconsin and back in 2 days.
I was riding my 72 CB750. The trip was just shy of 800 miles.
I don't think it would be that hard to do 500 mi. a day without hurting yourself to bad.
All the roads we rode were all 2 lane 55mph speed limits,(not saying I never went faster then that).
We stopped for lunch and several pee breaks at scenic turn outs.
Start early, enjoy the ride and the miles will click away.
Oh, an don't forget to bring a bottle of Asprin or Tylenol.

Give yourself a week or more to get there and take your time.
Take a different route the way back and take your time again.

3or4 days if you are out of shape.. And bike is in good  shape use interstates to make time. Dont have to ride fast but long hours. 16-20 works for me..
 Your mileage will vary.

I rode my freshly broken in f2 1500 mi in 4 days, did 600 of it in a day, and that was enough for a day for me. I let things cool on fuel stops, and it took it fine.  Keep an eye on engine temp, and you can ride as much as you can take. :)

We made it from Paris to Prague in two days back in 97 and it was hard pushing - 1500 km total.

I would allocate 4-5 days and get a windshield (or fairing)  to help with  fatique, but that's just me.

Simon - Which Honda do you mean? If you did 2200 miles on a CB750 in 2 days I would want to see that bike!! Thats an average 45 mph over 48 hrs! I could NEVER do 1100 miles in one 24 hr day on a CB750 but thats just me. I find 700 miles takes me about 12 hr -14 hrs total and the last 100 miles is not much fun  :-\

DonR - I think Jerry has it right although 3 days in a row for 2000 miles even for a young guy is pushing it. I was that young guy once on a stock unfaired CB750K6 and I got 650-700 in one day crossing South Dakota. I doubt I could have done it 3 days running.

Go for it!
cheers
Andy

I guess my best was 1300 miles in 4 days but the first two were goofing around and the next two were rain all day and then cold while my clothes were still damp. Looking back it was great. Not so much then.

5 days would be my approach, if you take it easier the first day it won't be as bad. Then you can push harder the 2nd or 3rd day. Aleve or Advil is recommended to help with any muscle soreness. +1 on the fairing to help with wind and light rain. Rain gear is a must even if you don't need it. Wool socks in case they get wet can help  still keep your feet warm whereas cotton will not.  Sweating or sweat retention in undergarments can contribute to monkey butt rash. Coconut or garments with silver can help prevent it...
RoadGear and Aerostitch and other motorcycle gear suppliers carry them.

I did about 780 miles on two 750,s in 26 hrs. Each time.... Since 07

Both times were first highway rides of the year, actually more than a year. One was a strutted rigid.. The other a just got running yard find. My buddy had put about 50 miles on that then I rode it about 15 miles, sat nite worked on it Sunday, then hit the road Sunday around 6 from Calgary Alberta.. Was in Shoshone Idaho, by dark next night.
Its largely mental, and ignoring minor pain, and finding your riding groove..the rigid, after 45 -50 minutes, I step off for 3_5 minutes...and get right back on. It works for me.. But you have to have clearly defined goals, and be able to sleep anywhere,
and at odd times..
If I am broken in after a few long rides, its a bit easier.. I have gone LA to here, and Sturgis to here, in 30 hours.. Its around 1150 miles.. The La one was on a touring twin. Never used a windshield, although one bike had a fairing with shield missing.
 Just do it..adventure awaits you..

At 200mph it should only take 10hrs...  :o  ;)  ;D

300 to 400 miles per day would be more realistic without having to push too hard or be rushed. My longest day was 750 miles, but I was in my early 20's then, and followed it up with a 500 mile day, then two more 650 mile days. I never knew there were so many seating positions on a CB750...

350 per day would be 3 days there and 3 days back. I know one rider that has done 600 miles in 8hrs... and I'm sure there's others that can top that!  ;)

Great scenic shot as well!

thanks

well i love to travel but i hate flying so the bikes have to work quite hard to earn their keep . i dont use the 750 for the long trips any more , have a couple of air cooled bmw's for that now . they dont do it any better than the honda but a bigger tank range and shaft drive does just swing it .
i only grabbed a few hours sleep on that trip and the part from Switzerland to spain i had a 125 aprilia frame strapped to the back !
think that photo is from austria
