Idle air bleeds...
« on: July 25, 2006, 09:31:19 PM »
Several times in other threads, I have seen mention of o-rings on the air bleed
screws.  I have four carb sets....two K0 and two K2...none of which have o-rings.
The screws are different in the later carbs, but the only thing associated with them
is the spring.  Also, the bikes seem to run fine (with stock exhaust and airboxes with
filters) regardless of where they are set. Certainly one quarter turn doesn't even
register on the carbtunes. They idle fine.....around 8-900 rpm when warm.

The bands are all tight with new rubbers in and out so I don't suspect air leaks. So,
should there be o-rings on the screws?  ???

No. The "K" models, as far as I remember, had no o-rings on them.

Do you own both the sandcast and late K0? Maybe you can help Dave try to figure out his "3-quart 750" issue? He has a K0 that only holds 3 quarts of oil, with filter and all. I've never seen one like his...  ???

Yep....the sandcast is around serial 2500 and the diecast is around 8000.  They both
had the early carbs which I replaced with later ones.

Wow, three quarts huh.  Could he have the wrong dipstick?? What thread is this on? :o

O rings on Idle mixture screws didn't appear until the 77-78 model carbs.
Earlier carbs had air bleeds and perfect seal wasn't required (air on both ends of the adjust screw).

Idle Mixture screws adjust a fuel air mix.  A seal is required to separate the liquid from the atmosphere on opposite ends of the adjust screw.  Don't want wet carbs now, do we?

I got to see what happens then one hot summer night in Illinois. The rider sat on his bike, lit a cigarette and scorched his right pant leg when it flashed the gas on the top of the engine.  :o  Right there in the Steak-n-Shake!
