battery drain after coil replacement 72 cb 500
« on: August 04, 2006, 08:55:54 PM »
put in accel 3 ohm coils and wires and a dyna s ignition along with new ngk plugs two days ago. synched carbs this morning. starting the bike after working on the carbs was difficult, battery was almost unable to crank, had to use kickstart. once running, now it idles smoothly ar around 1100 rpm, has great power in first three gears, then flattens out. went for a 15 mile ride this evening, by the end of the ride at speeds averaging around 45 mph, my blinkers were going slower and slower, the audible turn alarm only chirping once, until I accererated over 4000rpm.

the wiring job on ignition and coils was by the instructions. my splice for the red power wire is connected to the black/white switched ignition wire.

any suggestions on what might be causing a very new power drain?

If you have connected the red wire to the black/white feed to the coils, the you have the ignition permanently on draining the battery. The feed to the coils should be taken from the black wire which is live when the ignition key is turned on.

The black and whitw wire IS the correct wire as it is the output from the kill switch, sounds like you have dislodged some of the generator/regulator wiring whilst working. Just fitting coils cannot alter the charge rate BUT if the black wire at the regulator is not live when the ignition switch is turned you willl get no charge.
