General Questions 3k Tune-Up
« on: June 23, 2013, 03:04:09 PM »
I have been having some issues with my bike as of recent (750 K4).  It has been having an awful time starting.  I practically have to kick it over for a minute or two before it ignites the fuel.  Unfortunately, I haven't been able to ride it much except for 45 to an hour on the weekends (new baby coming).  I am suspecting it is time for a 3k mile tune up and possibly new points, couldn't hurt either way.  When I got the bike, I received several things the PO had.  One being a K&N filter and Daichi points (made in Japan not China), the point set didn't come with condensers though.  I am going to replace the air filter, as I am unsure exactly how old the old one is and I have had it for about two years.  Second, I need to perform the 3k tune-up.  One question is about these points, are the worth trying?  These actually do say they were made in Japan, will these suck as bad as their Chinese counterparts?

The other question relates to the tune-up.  I have both the Clymer manual and the shop manual for the bike, the original booklet that came with the bike, and of course everything that this website has provided.  Is there anything I should pay extra attention to as I am performing this tune-up, or things I should examine on top of the service?  There are roughly 16k miles on the bike, 2500 are mine, and the bike is completely stock, completely.

Clogged slow jets could also be a cause of hard starting. Have you cleaned or changed them?
Be sure to also replace your spark plug caps and trim approx 1/4" of the end of the wires before screwing on the new caps.

Thanks, forgot to mention I did do this.  I replaced the plugs as all but #2 looked fouled.  I was suspecting I had overfilled the oil so I drained some out.  I did also cut the wires by 1/4".  I should clean my carbs as these, to my knowledge, have not been done.

I should also note that the bike was running completely fine until I overfilled the oil but I do believe it is time for a complete service.  At least as much as my skills will allow.

If you have the original condensors in that bike change them out. After all these years they are weak and can cause weak spark. I can not say if those points are good or not, I just always stay with the Honda product. Did you ever clean those carbs? And have you checked the valve clearances? All issues that will affect the starting of the bike.

Ok guys, after reading everyones suggestions I have one question.  Has anyone used this service kit from David Silvers Spares?

http://www.davidsilverspares.com/CB750K4-FOUR-1974-USA/part_105594/

It seems like a pretty good deal.  I was changing out the old airfilter I have for a K&N that came with the bike but the damn thing will not fit.  The airbox is impossible to close so I am going to stick to paper.  Regarding the points and condensers, why is it cheaper to but the whole set-up vs. buying them individually?  I know this is an after-market points plate but that is what I would be using anyways.  The only other kit I saw that included condensers was from Sudco and didn't come with the plate.

Here is the other kit, which appears to be random as to who makes the parts, but that aren't Daichi.  It looks like David Silvers cheaper points and condensers are Daichi.  Any thoughts on these as well?  Like I said earlier, I do have a set of unused Daichi points but no condensers so theoretically I could just by the condensers and not have to worry about redoing the timing of the bike correct?
