'75 CB550 Emulsion Tubes - Where to get?
« on: June 27, 2013, 01:09:05 PM »
Does anyone know where I can get emulsion tubes for '75 CB550? Or do I just need to remove and clean?

I called local Honda shop and I might as well have been asking for a thermal discombobulator. They had no idea what I was asking for, even after telling them and describing the item (scary....).

The rebuild kit I have installed did not have them, and not sure if they are available alone.

How are they removed and installed? The manuals I have do not cover that.

Remove and clean, replace only if damaged.

They get tapped out from the carb bore end where the slide needle enters.  That end is a jet, by the way, so hit it or press with something softer than brass.  If stubborn, it helps to remove the slides.

I've always been curious: Which would wear faster: the needle or the emulsion tube jet? Or do they wear at the same rate needing to be replaced at the same time?

part no. JNH70C

If you replace the jets I would replace the needles as well.

They are both made of the same material, so if they rub each other, they would both wear equally.  But, the stock needles and jet mechanical dimensions don't allow the two to touch.  The slide's needle bore size holds the needle fairly centered and straight in the bore.  Further, the needle's jet (in the emulsion tube) is 2.60mm dia.  The needle's major diameter is only 2.515mm dia.  And, of course, that tapers narrower toward the tip.

Speaking of the Cb500/ 550 carbs.  I've not measured the 750 types.

SOHC Digger (SOHC4 handle) on here fixed me up with a set really reasonable and quick should you need to buy a set.  I am sure there are many others that have carb parts if you want to run a listing in the items wanted section.

Emulsion tubes are the only thing I can think that might be causing the problem. When I rebuilt the carbs last fall everything was replaced except the emulsion tubes, mostly because I wasn't sure how to get them out, and I didn't have replacements. The manuals didn't even mention them. I did a complete disassembly (minus the emulsion tubes)  and dipped the bodies in carb cleaner for a while. I then dried them, blew every orifice out with compressed air and reassembled.

The hesitation has gotten progressively worse. It ran pretty well for the first couple of months. I was also thinking ethanol fuel might be an issue as well.

Thanks for everyones advice. If I can get some time this weekend, I'll pull the carbs and start disassembling. Not looking forward to it.....I'll post some pics of the tubes when I get to them.

I had trouble finding emulsion tubes for my 550 as well, I spotted a new set for a 550F but wasn't sure if they would work being mine's a K. What I ended up doing was ordering rebuild kits for all 4 carbs on ebay from a Japanese seller and his kits were the only ones I ever spotted that came with the emulsion tubes. They weren't exactly the same as the factory tubes, only diff was the new ones didn't have as many holes in the side but they worked and the bike runs well now. I didn't want to mess with drilling more holes to match the factory ones because that's why my originals were screwed up in the first place, I had messed around with them when I should've left them alone until I actually knew what I was doing. :o I'll check ebay to see if I can find a link for you.

Well I found the seller on ebay but it doesn't look like his kits come with the emulsion tube anymore. Sorry.
