CB500k1 - a new little oil weep from an annoying place...
« on: June 28, 2013, 12:06:38 PM »
Oil is weeping from the vertical 6mm bolt that screws down into the head behind this little side cover that affixes to the side of the cylinder head cover.

The copper and aluminum washers are fine - the prob is the P.O. over tightened it, and now it is stripped.

I'm guessing I'm not the first to face this issue -- Any suggestions about how to solve this WITHOUT drilling (which will put aluminum chaff into my engine) or removing the head?

Maybe an "acceptable" ghetto fix? Like a thin sliver or two of beer can down into the hole?  ;-)

I just need this bolt to "bite" sufficiently to cause the thrust washers to spread and seal.  It's just a few pounds of torque.

In the fiche pic, the bolt is #22.

I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

Looks like drill tap and helicoil. Keep a rag stuffed anywhere you think shavings will go.

You could try JB weld on a stud of the correct length & then use a nut & washer at the top.  Should hold a few lbs of torque.

you might try a few threads longer bolt to get into unstripped metal, use new copper washers top and bottom, throw the aluminium ones,be sure the bracket has no burrs and is square.

You only have to remove the cam cover not the head, do it right and helicoil it
