1971 CB500 - Idle Speed Question Weirdness
« on: July 01, 2013, 04:16:56 PM »
Hello all.   New user here.   Recently got a 1971 CB500 with only 6100 miles out of a 35 year dry storage.  After cleaning out the tank, carbs, new petcock, plugs and adjustments... it lives again.  I've even (dangerously) driven it about 40 miles on the original tires (they do hold air!)    This bike seems to be pretty cold blooded.   It takes quite a while for it to idle on its own,  although it starts right away with the choke on for only a second or two.    The really strange part is that the idle drops by about 300-400 rpm when I put it on the side stand as opposed to having in a riding position or on the center stand.  It happens constantly.   Is this normal?  Any ideas what could be causing this to happen if it isn't?     How many turns should the idle air screw be set at ( I've seen everything from one to two full turns) Thanks for the insight.

Jeff

Not normally that cold blooded, may need the pilot jets and jetways cleaning. Tickover is normally set at about 1050 rpm WHEN FULLY HOT, this will NOT give you a reliable cold tickover---it will stall when cold.

As to revs dropping on side stand i would suspect the throttle cables are not routed/adjusted correctly
