Fuel Level Unit for a CB550

Hey Guys,

I have been reading and searching for a few hours on this and can't find anything to answer my question... Hoping someone can help point me in the right direction.

Was wondering if anyone has added a fuel level unit to a 550 tank? Perhaps from a 750a or a 82-85 Nighthawk??? Or perhaps out of something newer for part sourcing?

Any help would be appreciated. I'm am contemplating this as a sub project before the tank is resealed and painted...

It's interesting, with all of the really eleborate projects I have seen on this forum over the past 2+ years I don't recall anybody trying that.

That makes me feel a little better about not finding any info.

I may try and do this but not sure just yet. I have an Acewell 2853 so that part is taken care of. Right now I am researching the following:

- 750a: Top mounted (parts are a bit expensive)
- 83-85 Nighthawk 650: level unit seems hard to find and expensive let alone a junked tank
- 98-01 VFR800: Parts are less expensive and easier to find. Just not sure how or where I would fit the unit...

Also looked at the 94-97 VFR750 and the 82-85 Nighthawk 750 but they were very close to the ones above and more expensive to track down.

There are a couple of customizer/aftermarket/small production tank kits that use an external view tube to see level

Really? I will look for that... Any links by chance?

Also, a unit out of a 2001 Yamaha R6 is looking promising. Much more compact and not as much modification would be needed from initial look.

That is some weird #$%* I've never seen that.

I think I might have a solution though. The sensor off the 98-01 Yamaha R6 is a stand alone piece from the fuel pump. I found one on ebay for $20 and ordered it last night. My only concern right now is the height. If it is under 5 1/2 inches then I can place it behind the petcock. If it is a little taller then I will need to put it up towards the front of the tank.

If the the height of the unit pans out that I am going to source a junked R6 tank and cut the mount off of it and weld it to my tank and I should be good to go. If I find a quality tank I may even swap the filler over as well, but we'll see.

Thanks for the direction guys. Sounds like I may be trying something new! Will post my results if it works out!

I saw a 550 with a similar style fuel sight tube but it was far less ugly. It was mounted vertically on the front left edge and only about 4-6 inches tall. Though, I still think an internal device would be much better.
