The price of clip-on handle bars!!
« on: August 06, 2006, 04:39:37 PM »
I'm building another Cafeé Racer and I'm absolutely amazed at the price of clip-ons. For what they are they are f@#%ing expensive. How can Dennis Kirk (custom parts supplier) charge $181.99 for two 8" bars with little aluminium clamps on the ends ???

A used Bridgeport mill is $1500 or more. Figure 2 hours of layout and set- up and maybe another hour of machine time at $30- $40  an hour in wage plus overhead. Juxtaposed against that information, $190.00 doesn't really seem all that expensive for a VERY limited market product. But it seems the world has this problem; I deserve $100.00 an hour for my time, but I would only like to pay a couple o' bucks an hour for yours. Cheap goods and high wages and damn anyone who says otherwise! >:(

I work at Dennis Kirk. We need to make a profit on an item, just like any other company. If we could sell them for $10 and stay in business, I'm sure we would.

FWIW, if you can find the exact same item somewhere else for a better price, we'll beat their price, including shipping, handling, and any other fees the competitor charges, by a buck. Plus it'll ship the same day.

while I agree that is a lot to pay for such a simple piece of equipment, there is an article in THE HORSE about "you get what you pay for.

That avatar reminds me of the old chestnut, "We used to take our kids to the country, but somehow they kept finding their way home".

I have to confess that I have a set of Telefix clip-ons that some one here practically gave me. I can't remember much these days, but even though I don't remember your name, I thank you every time I go out on that bike.
