Bike rewiring, am I missing something?
« on: July 11, 2013, 10:02:51 AM »
Excuse all my posts today, just trying to get this thing running! I just rebuilt a 75 cb550. Last night I routed all the wires back in and made all the connections again. It was the end of the night and I just wanted to see the bike light up. So I hooked up the battery (came straight from the trickle charger), flipped the ignition, but nothing would light up. Lights didn't work, starter, indicators, signals, etc.

Like I said, it was really just a quick test and I haven't had a chance to check anything. I don't even have the taillight installed yet. But, before I start tearing apart the rat's nest inside my headlight bucket, is there anything obvious that I could be missing that would cause this? Could it have anything to do with the wires running to the points? I am not sure if I have the wires, that run to the points, installed in the correct order in terms of where the wires fit between the washers, insulators and other wires.

I know I have some troubleshooting to do but is there anything obvious that would cause a complete system blackout? Thanks!

This happened to me too and it turned out I forgot to attach the negative battery cable back to the bike.  Can't get more obvious than that!

Or check the fuses.
'Then' and 'than' are completely different words and have completely different meanings. Same with 'of' and 'have'. Set and sit. There, their and they're. Draw and drawer. Could care less/couldn't care less. Bought/brought FFS.

Or check the fuses.

Right.  My CB650 has a 30amp master fuse by the side of the battery box.  It is a flat fuse that looks like a wrench.  When I touched it, it crumbled.  Lucky I had a spare.

Negative wire is connected and fuses are the first on my list to check.

You did connect the ignition, right?

Do you have a multi-meter?  I would check and make sure that there is power running through the primary 30amp fuse before I did anything else.  Actually, I would check the battery with the multi-meter on the posts first, then with the positive post and a ground somewhere on the bike.  Then I would move on to the primary fuse.

Ok, where is the 30amp fuse? I only recall seeing 3 fuses, and the biggest one was 15A.

It only has three fuses. I think earlier models had the single big fuse.

The 500 had a single fuse (at least the '71 did).  The 550's have 3.
