Dog being put down right now...
« on: July 09, 2013, 06:22:16 AM »
Hi bikers,

My parents are having the dog that my brother, sister, and I all grew up with put down as I type this. He's 15 and full of cancer, but I have to be at work today so I can't be there to say goodbye. I just wanted to write this to get some emotions off my chest. He represents my childhood. He was born in our home, and was the one we kept from the litter. I'm going to miss him a lot. My wife is there for me, and cries with me when I'm sad about him going.

See you again, Luke.

Sorry for your loss.

My wife has a good philosophy.  Remember all the good times you had together and let that keep you from too much grief.  Our wire is 12 and we see him slowing down some.  It is worrisome.

We had to say good bye to our beloved basset hound of 14+ years. A friend sent use card with the following. It helped us and perhaps it will do the same for you. It's a difficult thing to go through.

Sorry to hear about your loss man. I know it's tough for now. I had to put down my german shepherd a while back, nothing harder than losing a childhood friend.

The saddest thing about dogs is that we can outlive so many of them. But we are lucky to have them with us while we can. He looks like a great dog.

Ya know they always say it's just a dog or just a cat but it's way more than that. We had to put a dog of ours down years ago, a dog our boys grew up with and they were still in grade school at the time. My wife told them that morning that I was going to be taking the dog to the vet that day (full of cancer as well), I worked nights at the time and was used to seeing my boys smiling faces at the bus stop coming home from work except that morning all I saw was their tears at the bus stop. Seeing them cry like that and knowing why they were crying absolutely positively broke my heart on the spot. I ended up taking them to school myself and explain the situation to their teachers. That was a very sad day in this house so I know exactly how you feel evanphi. Good luck and hang in there.

We had to do the same thing to our dog.  Rather than leave her at the vet's to be buried who knows where, we had her cremated and brought her back home.  When my time comes, she will go with me.

I feel your pain we had to do that ourselves not too long ago. Oddly he looks like your dog I got teared up when I read your post. I hope you are doing well. It's very sad to lose a companion like that.

Sounds like you were lucky to have him in your life, and I am sure he was lucky to get to live his life on this planet in a family that loved him a lot.
He was one lucky dog I'm sure!

Thanks for all your replies. He's in a better place now. It is easier, now, knowing that he is no longer in pain. I went for a nice  ride tonight and thought of him.

Amazing how hard it is to put a beloved animal down.  Innocence of them I guess.  You'll always have the memories.
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

We had to do the "Last Act of Kindness" to two Dogs we had for 17 years. The wife and I still tear up when we speak of them. We all know it is the right thing to do, it also hurts so bad. It sounds like you two were very good for each other. My heartfelt condolences.

Sorry for your loss, Luke.  I held Lulabelle 14 years ago when we had to do the same.  It was very peacefull, and I knew right away that she was free of the pain and suffering that it caused.  We've got 2 15 year olds now, so I guess we'll go through it again soon.   They have all been family, and a source of great joy for years.

I went through that with my St.Bernard 13 years old, golden retriever 9 years, English Mastiff, 8 years, now we have a bloodhound/mastiff mix. He was like a mule puppy but now we love him like the rest. Guess that makes me old.
