I don't think I have CR carb's but my 72/500 had them on it when I got it. I don't think I'm going to be using them.

those copper stacks do have screens, should keep out rocks and nasty insects

The stock airbox on my '79 CB650 has built-in plastic velocity stacks on each carb. I would think an unrestrictive air filter would work just as well as straight velocity stacks but still have the advantage of the cleaner air.

I have had V-stacks on my scoot since the day I bought it - and the previous owner had them on the bike for the two years he owned it, the bike is/has been running fine.

Proteal, (or anyone else) I like those but maybe you could help in defining pods vs velocity stacks...are they the same with just different terminoligy? Do you need the same rejetting as if you use pods? I'm not a big fan of the stock airbox look.....too bulky. But lots of guys on this sight seem to think that anything different than stock will cause lots of headaches...ie rain. looking to clarify the issue.....thanks.

IMHO pods are individual or in some cases dual(2 carb) air fiters usually incorporating foam, stacks are just pretty looking inlets on each carb
I ran stacks on one of my 500's for about 2 years with no issues, this included daily rider, some track work and the occasional long ride.

thanks, so the ones that we see in the pics(copper ones), would they have a paper element to them or just a screen? And what is IMHO? If its just a screen then you are protected from rocks and bugs and such, but what about finer particles? I'm still kinda unclear $:-\$ and hesitant to push this question but when I see some of the pods that some guys use, they are paper with a screen on top, correct? And the velocity stacks shown above are only screen. right or wrong?

This is a pod air filter (Known as "Pods"):

The copper things in the above post are velocity stacks.

IMHO is an abbreviation for In My Honest Opinion

I would guess you would get more "protection" form any type of filter , compared to a basically open Velocity stack. But which looks better ?

If you are running stacks and get scared of the screen not being enough protection, I have an old trick for you.

Back in the day, and mostly on brit bikes.....racers would use pantyhose (on the bike

)

Find a pair that the wife/GF either doesnt know about or is throwing away and tell her you need them...this alone should be fun, but wait there is more

Cut enough to sandwich between the stack and the carb throat and let the stack hold it in place. I have never tried it, but it sounds like it would work.

I am letting mine "age" in a flowerpot in my backyard at the momment

They are turning a nice off green color - as copper does in the "elements".
Just increases the badass look of them - i think...

Believe me guys, I did the math...I loose money on these (If I add in my labor) and the price of copper has nearly trippled.

Anyone interested in getting a set, hold off for a week or two. Me and the skunkworks crew have a new filter setup that is the pinnacle of cool, but I need to finish a few details first.
