A little baby powder on the tubes and some air helps alot. Don't use screwdrivers! Also, heavy duty tubes are worth the money, the thicker material stays out of the way better.  I only pinch 1 out of three now that I have gottne good ;)

+1 on the baby powder

Real tire spoons (3 of them), Soapy water for tire lube, and I blow them up  more than a little.  Also helps to have another pair of hands.

I wound up putting an old tube back in place because I pinched the new one.  argh

The one thing that changed my life (related to mounting tires) is lubricant.  I bought a spray bottle of stuff made specifically for this purpose.  It felt like cheating.  It worked much better than soapy water and I understand it doesn't leave the wrong kind of residue.  I don't recall the brand but I believe I bought it at the same place I bought my tires.  Here's an example: http://www.motorcycle-superstore.com/14/71/994/44833/ITEM/Matrix-Concepts-1-7-Formula-8-Tire-Mounting-Lube.aspx?WT.ac=SLIsearch

Besides making it simple to get the tire over the rim, it also makes it simple to get the tire to align on the rim.  You know those lines close to the rim... well, you need to make sure they maintain the same distance from the rim all the way around.  When you lube, the tire more easily slides into the proper place.

Good luck.

+1 on the lube, it always makes things easier. Personally, I prefer 'Tire Slick' or 'Tyre Paste' over soapy water. The water could possibly lead to corrosion.

I pinched a tube very slightly and did not know it. The front tire went down at speed. That is something you do not forget easily. I was lucky and I don;t think I will be that lucky twice. Be careful.

Also, once you get the tire on, fill a little air then bang the tire around on the ground on all sides, fill more air, bounce, fill, bounce, etc...

This helps work the tube into place when you're filling the tire.

Been there, pinched that. The wider rear is easier, I pinched the old front and said screw it and gave it to a shop. With the front, me learning and "saving money" would have been more expensive. Drag specialties heavy tube is 19$, and they mounted it at that for me at a local shop

More expensive tube really makes a difference, they weigh twice as much and you can really feel the difference

have ripped two damn tubes trying to get one in the back wheel, now i have to drive 45 mins to get a new one. By god I am having them install it this time..... So F'in pissed right now

Used a screwdriver didn't you?

First you put the tire on the rim,  Just one side. Facing the right direction.

Then you remove the valve core from the tube and inflate the tube to get all the wrinkles out.

Then you put the tube into the tire that is on the rim.

Next put the valve stem of the tube into the hole in the rim and finish stuffing the tube into the tire.

Then inflate the tube a little to make sure it is all straight and smooth.
Let the air out.

Lube the rim on both sides with soap and water.

Then start putting the other side of the tire onto the rim using your hands and finishing with TIRE SPOONS ONLY.

Start at the valve stem.

When the tire is completely on the rim make sure the valve stem is straight and
none of the tube is sticking out. Instal the valve core now.

Start inflating the tire making sure it is lining up and the bead is even all around the rim.

Great description. I use Ru-Glyde for lubricating the bead. Just pour some in a plastic container and use a bristle brush to slather up the tire. I will often have to reapply more than once to maintain good slip, so don't be stingy with the stuff:

http://www.pepboys.com/product/details/8446008/

Tire spoons are a MUST have. You need at least two, three can be handy. All of the tubes I tore was back in the screwdriver in lieu of tire spoon days:

http://www.harborfreight.com/24-inch-general-purpose-tire-iron-93230.html

Rim savers help protect the lip of the rim, especially aluminum. Use the lanyards! I dropped one inside the tire (on install) and struggled to get it back out! Two are better than one (two per set, four total):

http://www.cyclegear.com/CycleGear/Accessories/Tools/Tire-%26-Wheel-Tools/brand/MOTION-PRO/Rim-Protector/p/36313_00000

And finally, some short blocks of wood, 1x4x3 and 2x4x3 can be used to prop the sidewall up while you are inserting the tube into the half installed tire (meaning one bead is slipped over the rim before inserting tube... right?).

Just like everything else, it's maddening till you get the hang of it!

I've also found that a 5 gallon bucket is a great platform to work on:  Brake rotor fits right into it and so does rear sprocket, keeping both wheels stationary while you work.

Keep in mind these two things,
The beads should be to the middle, as you work the far side..easier.
90% of good tires will go on Without irons, If you put the beads in the center..that is Both Beads, and. Beads are lubed..you need a good soft hammer the wrong one will damage your rim.

RuGlyde is cheap.. Still got At least 1/2 of the gallon I bought in the eighties left

a few things I've found helpful, removed the valve core. Fill tire. Let the air back out. make a bucket of warm very soapy water and slather the tube in it.

My brother pinched my rear tube right at the end of a laborious install. We patched it. Tire irons + Windex + elbow grease + technique.

Yes I agree...
"while you are inserting the tube into the half installed tire (meaning one bead is slipped over the rim before inserting tube... right?."

Tire in the middle of the rim (Like 754 says), too very important.

Allows the tube to fully deflate while installing it in the tire.  Valve core in, air can't get out.

Also when you have to blow up and seat difficult tubeless tires it helps to have the valve out to seat the bead.
