Comstar ID'ing ??
« on: July 11, 2013, 11:23:36 PM »
Hey folks ; I'm trying to gather info for an upcoming project. I'm wanting to use Comstar wheels (blade style) . Yeah, I know lots of folks don't like 'em, but I do, LOL ! I'm not quite sure how I'm need to look for the info I need in the quickest manner so I thought I'ld ask you folks and see what your suggestions were. I'm trying to gather specs such as axle size, rim sizes ?X?, what they can be found on and so forth. Here is a link to the style I'm looking for,  http://images.canadianlisted.com/nlarge/honda-front-end-parts-and-comstar-wheel_5623992.jpg  .  Any help with my endeavors will be appreciated !!   Thanks,   ...cougar...

HEY COUGAR,
Those are also called REVERSE COMSTAR because the spoke lips are to the inside of the wheel. I know the 77/78 Supersports had those wheels. I know some of the early 80s Shaft drive (CX500) ran them.

Missed you at the ROOST this year!!!

Sunny is right. The picture is of a comstar. The reverse ones have the lip out.

There were plenty of sizes. I would recommend tracking down tubeless ones. Some where and some where not.

Chuck ; I was TOTALLY BUMMED that I couldn't make it this year to see you and the rest of the HondaChopper folks TOTALLY BUMMED !!!!! But the 'ol lady (only 1 working at the moment) said that if her bike wasn't street ready that we weren't going ! So since I hadn't had electricity for quite a while and no money to build with her bike was on hold  :'( ! That won't happen next year, I don't care if I gotta sell something I'll be there (I hope  ::) ) . Here is a pic of the style I'm wanting to use.   . I'ld rather not use a shaft drive rim as I don't have the equip. to build a spacer/hub thing and can't afford to have it done!        scunny ; Is yours this style ?    kghost ; Yes tubless is the way I want to go. I can't stand dealing with tubes and can plug/patch a tire if I need to in an emergency      ...cougar...   P.S. Hey I actually figured out how to post a pic YEAH !!! LOL

The 78 cx500 had the same front wheel you show. The 79 had the same wheels but the black Honda end caps were removed.

The cx500 having shaft drive would not be compatible even though it is a drum brake...would have to fabricate a sprocket drive for the rear wheel.

Cb400 of at least one year used the comstar and don't remember if the 650 had reverse comstars or regular...

Motorera.com might have info if you want to spend time sorting through all the models.  Won't tell you wheel size though.

I will check my cx tomorrow for the size... Most likely the front is a 1.85 x 19 as the cb550 uses same tire size. The cx comstar is tubeless compatible.

I'm completely wrong then, I always thought the ones with the lips inside were REVERSE commies because less were used and harder to come by.
The 77/78 CB 750SS used this style Comstar. I have a rear one with DISC brake but have to check if it has the black at the wheel!

Well, if I'm understanding all this correctly, LOL ! I'm going to be looking for Regular Comstar wheels . I currently have a set of what I'm believing are Reverse Comstars.    I have a matching set of these that are supposed to be from a 1981 CB750 DOHC. I think I'ld rather have the other style but I might try these on and see what they look like. But like I said at the start I'm gathering info. Not sure about mounting the ones I've got because I haven't looked to see what all the front fork dems. are going to be to mount these. Whew it's he!! trying to build in your head, LOLOL !!    ...cougar...   P.S.  fatslob seems I already have a set. But thanks anyway.  P.S.S  Chuck have a look and snap me a pic, no hurry. I've got a couple/three different swingarms, but that could be changed as well to accommodate a disc brake. My current Comstar is drum.

The black ones are reverse comstars.  The first comstars had the lips to the inside, and were silver like the one above, although that might be a hawk wheel.

Reverse comstars are ugly as sin, but I have a soft spot for the regular comstars.  The set on my F2 are solid in the turns, although they are HEAVY rims compared to spokes.

That's the only reason I have the ugly things

CB1100R and CM400 also had reverse comstars, the latter being interesting as it had an 18" front.

I  know comstars are quiet a matter of personal taste... so i thought I'd share this photo that I took at Mallory today. No doubt it has provoked some debate among the marque purists.

I have a pair of comstars just like in the pic.  They came with a 71 cb500 for some reason.  I am reverting back to the original wires.

That would be the first and third pic.  Not the black rim.
