Rear disc rim limitations
« on: July 31, 2013, 09:40:59 AM »
Mostly I go with stock and augment just a bit. But along with the notion of the 16"er, and more chrome, I have always been interested in getting a spoked rear disc brake setup on my bike. I recently saw a wheel for sale that is a Super Sport hub laced with what looks like a 16" drop center Harley rim. There is no disc. But from comparisons to other CBs and Fs, I began to question whether the rim will clear the braking mechanism. Anybody have any info or thoughts?

What am I doing and why am I doing it? Those are excellent questions.

It should be a fairly straight forward measurement. What is the distance from the axle centerline to the highest point on the caliper? What is the distance from the center of the rim diameter and the shoulder of the rim. I would guess (and this is a complete and utter knowledge free guess) that if the former (the center to caliper measurement) exceeds about 7" you are SOL using a 16" rim.

I'm don't have eyes on kinda help but I think the caliper would be what would make or break the fitment back there with a 16" wheel

If you send a PM to Expent (Eric) and ask I'm sure he would measure the distance on the wire wheel F bike he recently acquired for you.

I agree. I'm off to measure my caliper. Anybody have the rear disc dimensions?
