1965 Allstate/vespa (engine out)
« on: July 05, 2013, 05:27:26 pm »
Hello just picked up this 1965 allstate/vespa scooter. I belongs to my brother inlaw and he had it put on the moving truck when my parents moved out here last week. Its a pretty cool little scooter and seems like most of the parts are there and only 2300 miles. I need to do some research before I restore it so if anyone has any experience with these let me know. I will be doing this restore on it in between downtime from my other projects. Not sure why I am kinda of excited to restore it but should be fun.

Matt

That's a nice looking Vespa mate, I'm guessing the "Allstate" is just "badge engineering" like the Harley Aermacchi's or the Sears Allstate Puch Motorcycles, back in the day. It looks pretty tidy now, does it need restoring? I think I'd just get it running, and ride it! Cheers, Terry. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

There's a member on here who's really had lots of experience fully rebuilding & performance tuning a P200 Vespa scooter;do a search & read all his notes. He hasn't posted much lately as far as I've seen... I was following his build w/ much enthusiasm about a year ago.

Thanks Terry from the quick read I did looks Vespa did something like the Harley Aermacchi. I think he has always wanted to get it restored it is a bit rough but overall not in bad shape at all.

Thanks goldarrow. Just started to take it apart will show you the carbs when I get to them. I wonder if I can put a pod on them..:)

Well got the engine out over the last few days.

removing the wiring

remove gearbox selector

exhaust

choke and throttle cable disconnect

rear brake cable

remove rear shock engine mount

swing arm mount

and bam out it came.

Pretty much stripped down gotta drill the rivets out thats holding the chrome trim on and can start body work. Surprisingly parts are very easy and cheap to get for these scooters.

Ha ha, I love those Zombie Gnomes! Hey Matt, you should "warm up" that little Vespa engine, it's screaming for a nice expansion chamber, some rejetting and a pod filter! Cheers, Terry. ;D
