One David amongst a bunch of Goliaths
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:25:47 PM »
I just got back from spending a day at Putnam Park road course where my youngest son experienced his very first track day on a road course. The place was packed with wicked fast sportbikes except for this brave soul who brought along a early 70 sumtin rd350 to tangle with the sportbikes. The owner was setting it up for a vintage class the requires the bike to be completely stock, it got whoooped of course but needless to say I still thought it was the coolest bike out there.

It was my first time at a track day as well although I was just there to spectate and help my kid out, I did however have to call my wife after every session to let her know our boy was doing just fine. :) The event was held by an organization called Sportbike Track Time and I was very impressed with how they ran the event, they didn't just let all the novice riders go out on the track and have at it they instead went step by step in the first 3 or 4 sessions, each session going faster with experienced riders who were there as instructors riding with them and having a "classroom" after each session. It wasn't until after lunch that they let the riders go for it in their 20 min sessions but even then they still had instructor/teacher riders on the track with them. My kid had a blast and learned a lot about riding technique as well.

What surprised me the most was the age of most of the riders because I was expecting to see nothing but late teens or 20 year old riders. Just the opposite, I would say 80% of the riders in the novice, intermediate and advanced classes ranged in age from 30 to 50+ year old riders in fact my kids instructor was 65!! That's the news my wife didn't like hearing because as soon as I got home I was looking at my 550 from a track bike point of view. She said NO!!  :'(
