I use Kerosene , I don't use the electric pump or smoke near it.
I was recently considering sealing off the pump hole just to keep all the fumes in check.
I also add carb cleaner, brake clean ( and everything else that cleans) into the mix every time I clean something. So right now it's cleaning parts very well, probably toxic as hell, and a real health risk....But I figure that I'll be effected by all the aluminum oxides and have Alzhiemer's long before the cancer can kill me.
I really hate dirty parts.
I'm sure someone here uses something safer.

For anything with oil or grease, kerosene is the best. I have tried all kind of degreasers, Kero kicks all their asses. If you want a small amount get some Lamp Oil, it is just Kero.

So, is a tank cleaner a parts cleaner or an ultrasonic cleaner?

Purple (biodegradeable) Simple Green from Home Depot does a nice job on aluminum and is gentler on aluminum but is more expensive.
Kerosene is a very good degreaser.

If you own a shop in California you can only use a biodegradable water soap base products. Which isn't so bad, The degreaseres out now are fairly good.
