Cb550 electric starter gone crazy...do i need to worry?
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:46:10 PM »
Ok, so I drove up to the mountains with a friend to camp out.  We're both on 550's.  smooth sailing the whole 150 mile ride.  Go out for beer, leave the store, start the bike up with the electric start.  my electric starter stayed on for a while and i didn't know until i stopped at a light.  (I think i drove like a mile with this thing continuously engaged before i noticed...#$%*).  Pulled over and shut the bike down.  When i turned the bike on, the starter was engaging itself;  it won't shut off!  Pulled the headlight bucket and disconnected the elec. start.  Kicked the bike over and back on my way.  But here's the scary part:  as soon as i pulled away it felt like the starter clutch was jamming up the engine, so i popped the clutch and it stopped.  Rode for about 2 miles after that back to the campground with no problems in and out of gears 1st thru 3rd.

My question is:  will i be safe to ride all the way back home without my electric starter (though disabled) messing with the bike?  Is anything potentially screwed up?  What should I look for?

Thanks.

I WOULD SAY YOU SHOULD MAKE IT HOME AND IT SOUNDS TO ME LIKE YOUR SOLENOID IS STUCK OPEN OR BAD CONNECTIONS THERE CHECK AND REPLACE...

Thanks for the input.  Yeah, Bike made it home fine.  Ran great, no problems.  Gotta sort out the electrical issue with the starter/solenoid, possibly the pushbutton.  I'l figure that out no prob.  The thing that alarmed me was the grinding gear feeling when I finally pulled away after disconnecting it.  I'm guessing it was just stuck engaged at that point and just needed to be freed up.  All is well now.  Thanks.

It's not the solenoid

Yeah, my guess is the connection in the handlebar control housing.  If there is one thing I'm comfortable with, it's tracing out wiring.  So wherever the problem is, I'll find it.

a lot of times, that yellow/red will strip back a bit, baring itself between the little insulator board and the bar.. OR the button arcing all the time has worn a divot in it, and a little emery board will solve that.

I'll look out for those things.  Thanks for the heads up.  And I will report back on what it turns out to be.

Turns out, it was the most logical reason and the first place I was gonna look.  You guessed it, Phil71, bare Y/R wire shorting against the handlebar.  Resoldered connection and heatshrunk it all the way up to the solder joint.  All better now.  Thanks for the input everyone.
