new to welding question
« on: July 10, 2013, 04:36:07 PM »
Just got a mig 180 welder.  We have a auto darkening helmet with a maximum shade of 10
Not getting flash, no pain but my eyes feel odd for several hours after only a few seconds of welding.
Tried putting shade 5 sun glass like things under the welding helmet but that did not help.
We are welding outside so lots of ventilation.

Any thoughts would be great.

Try adding a piece of leather on the bottom of the front of the helmet by your chin, light can come in through there and be bright and may be causing your irritation

Try something like this

Certainly worth trying.
I think we will add a piece of leather, or 2 or 3   ;)

Do you think shade 10 it to low?

Welding outside with an auto darkening helmet s not the hot set up.
They work better in a shaded area.
If you can't find shade, use leather, leather, leather.

10 is good for mig.  When you say your eyes feel funny do you mean when you get done welding its hard to focus on anything that you look at? Kind of like seeing stars but more like seeing a weld puddle where you look? If so you might want to get a darker helmet, or one that adjusts shades.

At work if I have to use mig I turn my helmet down to 10 since mig isn't as bright as the accu-pulse welding. But otherwise I use shade 12.

You didn't mention what kind (brand) of helmet you have......

I have a cheap made in china helmet. Sunlight plays hell on it.

Some helmets are better than others

The helmet is a Lincoln, sold at our local Canadian Tire store for 150 dollars.  But don't let the high price fool you, we pay crazy prices for some stuff here.
Auto darkening, no battery no shade adjustment.
I don't see spots, eyes just feel like I need to rub them a lot.  But I don't.  Visine did not help.
I appreciate all the comments.
We are going to try a fixed shade helmet, as soon as I can find one.  (and will add the leather ASAP)

You're supposed to wear a helmet?!?

But seriously, if you're suffering from flash burn, try lying down and put on your eyes a small potato that has been cut in half and soaked in milk, raw side towards the eye. This works.

I got welders flash when I first started work, had to wear 2 pairs of sunglasses just to drive to work.

Also if you're welding with a wall to your back the light can reflect into your helmet from the back.

The point I missed above is could it be eye strain?

I don't know your particular situation but don't were a white/light colored shirt. The flash will also bounce off that and up toward your eyes as well.   ...cougar...

Typically wear green coveralls and they get pretty dirty so should be good there.  Just bought the welder and have some things to fix, but we need to learn how to weld first.
Haven't made a weld longer than 5 inches yet so should not be strain.

Still looking for a fix shade helmet when we get it we will add the blast shields (leather) and see what happens.
