CB550k/CB500 Cylinder head cover frankenstein job...
« on: July 14, 2013, 05:05:46 PM »
Go with me here for a sec.

I am in the midst of a rebuild of a 77 cb550k.  The donor bike had a cracked off bolt boss on the cyl head cover and a couple other cracked damaged areas. (P.O. overtorqued it to stop an oil leak

I had previously bought a NOS cylinder head cover for a cb500 but didn't use it  -- it came raw/empty - without the rocker set.

So - does anyone know for sure if I can use the rocker shafts from the cb550k in the cb500? I know I won't have the locator pins in place, but I could conceivably do the double o-ring trick (in the end caps) to keep em in place, right?
I recently restored and sold a 77 cb750f, and am nearly finished with a (former basket case) cb750k5.  This is a place to share, learn and enjoy.  I am grateful to and for 99+% of this site's membership.

The original 500 had 8 short shafts, then i think the later 500/550 had 4 long shafts (Unpegged) then the later 550  had the 4 long pegged ones.

Now I aint sure but I think the pegged ones are longer than the unpegged try slidding them into the cover END WITH THREADED HOLE OUTWARDS (so you can get them back out!!) and see if the remaining hole is deep enough to get the end cap on. If not you will have to either shorten the shafts or get the correct ones
Semi Geriatric ex-Honda mechanic and MOT tester (UK version of annual inspection). Garage full of "projects" mostly 500/4 from pre 73 (no road tax in UK).

Thanks... I will try it as soon as the pegs out, which is a righteous #$%* to do
