Changing to tubeless on Comstars
« on: August 07, 2006, 07:09:06 PM »
So, am I right in assuming that as long as you have the appropriate valve stem (to seal the wheel rim), and tubeless tyres, there is no rocket science to switching from tube to tubeless on Comstar wheels?? The Spitfires I am using are tube or tubeless so I figure I'll go for the cooler running route and junk the inner tubes.

Anybody done it?

Someday I might go to coms but I do not see where there should be an issue.  Those spitfires are becoming fairly popular. I had them for a few years now.

The ancient tires that came off my *new* 1980 cb650 back in 2003, were tubeless comstars.  So that's how they installed my modern Dunlop GT 501s 7000 miles ago -- sure, they're bald now, but I haven't had any issues with their tubelessness.

Go fer it.

There are two different comstars with different size valve holes. One has the all rubber valve, like a car only shorter, that pulls through the hole leaving a mushroom head on the inside and has a biggere hole. The other has the small hole for a standard tube valve which Kawasaki do a tubless valve for  using a rubber washer inside and out.

On a slightly different note if you fit a tube into a comstar with the bigger hole you should use the special nut available as a Honda part to take out the play between valve and rim or you risk ripping the valve out of the tube

Thanks all! When I get a minute or three I'll whip the tyres off and junk those inner tubes. now to find that minute or three!
