530 VS 520 chain ??
« on: July 17, 2013, 10:40:13 PM »
Hey Folks ; First let me say I'm a Long Winded person ! Now, I've got a problem with a project I'm putting together. Without getting into the engine specifics (YES SOHC4), I'll just say that I've got a 530 motor sprocket and a 520 wheel sprocket (1985 CMX250 Rebel wheel) . So far I've not not been able to find a 530 sprocket for the Rebel wheel. I haven't looked for a 520 front sprocket yet ! I'ld rather convert the rear to the wider/stronger 530. I'm also trying to keep/use the rear wheel that I have for numerous reasons. The way the bike sits with it 130/90-15" , Very Nice wheel (chrome & condition), tire like New, Cost ! You get the idea  ;) ! Someone once mentioned to go ahead and run the 530 chain on the 520 sprocket, since only the width of the chain was different. While this is true, I'm concerned with the wider chain rocking (?) on the thinner sprocket also I would think that the wider chain could walk from side to side on the rear sprocket causing a mis-alignment on the front sprocket !! My Head hurts LOLOL ! Any suggestions, comments, questions. All will be taken with a grain of salt (more if needed! )   Thanks,   ...cougar...

Just get a custom rear.

I had a similar problem with a K4 frame and F2 wheel.

It's 530 vs 630

JT sprockets or Superior should be able to get you one at resasonable cost

kghost ; I've used JT Sprocket before (with good results) but I contacted them with what I need and they said "No Go" this time :(  ! I also contacted "Sprocket Specalists (spelling?) They said $79.99 shipped and it's Aluminum (Hmmm). I'll try your other suggestion and see what they say. Right now I'm building on a Less than Shoestring budget and $80 bucks for a 1 sprocket is a chunk, LOL !   ...cougar...

$80 sounds like a lot until you remember most rears are $45-55 just by themselves.

For the odd $30 they solve the problem.

Lots of racer boys with 100-150 HP convert the 530 to 520 to save weight, bearing mind that they are racing and replace the chain more often than we. These bikes have more power and torque to the ground than ours so I would suspect that a conversion to 520 (changing your front sprocket) and a nice o-ring chain would be just fine. Your consideration for safety and mileage may vary...
