Opinions on Gas Tank Requested
« on: July 18, 2013, 11:23:17 PM »
Hey Everyone,

Playing with some ideas on the tank. Messing around with a filler cap idea that would require me to have more depth in the tank. Did some über basic mocks ups. Thinking a little bit of a raise toward the front, then flatten a bit, and finally drop hard to the back. Filler cap would be center on the tank and about 4 inches back from the front. Thoughts?

I'd be interested to see a bit more of the concept here.
I'm having difficulty visualizing the mods.

Ok.. Disclaimer... Not the best mockup below but I hope it gives the idea.

Blue circle is the filler. Would be flush on the tank.

Pregnant cafe knocked up by a bobber ;)

No just kidding. Cafe style.

I can mock it up on the frame as it sits right now. That may help but the slop I am "trying" to convay is the same as my seat cowl.

Pretty cap.

At the end of the day build what makes you happy.

I prefer a slim tank myself

Ok, thanks for the clarification. I see the issue now.

I love the modern flush cap look, but didn't realize there wasn't enough clearance over hump to facilitate it. Building up the height is certainly possible and it gives you creative freedom to play with the profile but i'd think it's an expensive and time consuming endevor. You may want to look at other CB tanks for some additional room. Maybe an F tank or even a 750 tank. Are there any other bikes that have a similar cap with less depth? How about offsetting the cap to right of centre?

Just thoughts.

Ya, I picked up a 2001 R6 tank to use the Fuel Level Sender out of to wire up to my Acewell. That part will be super simple.

Since I have the tank I started looking into taking the cap section. Measured the cap section on the R6. The counter sunk portion is about 3/4" deep. And then the filler part has a lip down in the tank. The total height is just over 2 inches. If I measure the 550 tank I only have about an inch and a half from the top of the tank to the hump about 2 inches back from the front of the tank. Not really any room to lower then hump obviously so I starting think I could take the taper of my seat and apply it to the tank. I figure I only need 1/2" - 1" additional height to make this work.

I thought about offsetting it and haven't completely disregarded it. Just really like the look with it on center.

I also threw it up on the frame late last night and it didn't look to bad. Also hopped on the interwebs and found this:

I know I don't need to "bubble" it as much but I like the concept.

I know this is going to be expensive but I haven't seen anyone else do this just yet so I kind of like the idea of do something unique, ya know?
