Removing Anodizing off rim
« on: July 18, 2013, 06:40:10 AM »
Hey guys, heres my problem, I have front and rear  gl aluminums wheels for my project, front pretty darn clean, rear, not pretty darn clean, so I tryed removing
the anodizing on one section of the wheel, test waters so to speak, with easy off which did remove material, really not easy off, is it common or normal to have
pitting under the anodizing, because I got it,I will sanding till i'm dead to trying
to remove all the pitting, does anybody have a CLEAN 2.50 X 17 rear steel wheel  that they would part with, these aluminum wheels are to much trouble
right now please help.

Please and thank you

Annodizing leaves a hard surface of oxide on the surface.

Some folks recommend greased lightning cleaner/degreaser....

I've always just bead blasted mine.

soak in baking soda and water. It is slightly caustic so it will dissolve anodizing but not harm alumimum. Rinse in water.

Super clean will strip the very tough clear coat Honda used on some of the alloy wheels. Not sure what anodized wheels Honda used. Got photos?
Failing clear coat allows aluminum to oxidize badly causing a blotchy dull aluminum that is white to dull gray colored. Stripping the clear coat allows the aluminum to be polished to a nice shine, it can be recleared or just maintained with polish. Protective polishes like Maas can help extend time between maintenance.

My son used airplane stripper and had good luck didn't harm nothing. I personally like using a scotch Brite pad still a lot of work but with good results
