Anyone have any great paint ideas for a k8?
« on: July 18, 2013, 12:43:35 PM »
I don't like the color or shape of the black tank on my K8, but I love the look of the pre-77 models in candy gold.  I know that changing to the pre k7 look requires a different tank and seat, and with a proper paint job in candy gold running $600-$800, I am looking for alternatives.  Right now the alternatives I'm looking at involve painting the fenders and rim black, and painting the tank like one of the following
or

Does anyone have design suggestions that involve keeping the k8 tank?

It isn't the price of a professional paint job that I'm afraid of, it's the price of a tank and seat on top of the paint job.

Guess I'm one of the few that like the K7-8 tanks, like the earlier ones too.

Painting a tank and covers does not always cost $600-800.  My K7 tank is at my painters shop right now, it'll cost about $250 (no dents and minimal prep needed, covers are new)

Have you looked for a painter?  Don't go to a big body shop, their overhead is high. My guy has a booth in his garage.  He's painted 3 other tanks for me.

I like my K7 tank, I did modify the fillerneck/door.

I also have another tank with the door that I will paint the same way (I learned alot during the whole process to make this one come out better)

I thought my idea is good, but I don't want no one copying me. :)

Did it all myself, except the top coat.

@andy750

I despise 77-78 tanks but you make me reconsider. That k4 color scheme looks spot on.

+1 Andy!
I knew you had a couple CB750's but didn't know one was a 78. That paint looks great!

I think Andy is using this on his 74 when he wants a touring tank.

Sorry guys I was riding in Maine this weekend - no Internet :) Juan is correct it's for the K4 touring bike. Just need to get a seat made to fit the tank since the stock K4 seat is too long. No pics yet of it actually on the bike. Soon though!

Cheers
