The front sprocket is fine with a loose fit on the spline shaft.
The sprocket cover has a steel chain guide in it, and the mount can break, allowing it to contact the chain.
A bad front sprocket, dry chain, or worn chain, can make the chain climb worn sprocket teeth, and contact the steel chain guide, which shortly thereafter breaks one of the steel guide mount points.
Or, it could be that the chain is so loose that it slaps or grinds on the chain guard during deceleration.
Have you adjusted the chain tension? Was there weight upon the seat when you did? Have you rotated the rear wheel to search for tight spots in the chain? Is the chain properly lubricated? Do you have a center stand?
