The only bike I've had that I really pushed was my '73 CB350F.  That was definitely the most intense 100mph I've ever done!  It wanted to go faster, but I didn't.  Besides, the front tire was starting to lift off the ground.

The front wasn't lifting because of the power, it was due to wind resistance combined with the light weight.  For a vintage racer, if you like the 350, you'll love the 400F.  Weighs the same as the 350, but lots more power, factory rearsets, and a six-speed gearbox.  I was too timid to ever find the top end on mine.

with a freshly run in motor and no mirrors and a long bit of freeway i saw 220kph at around 9500 rpm on the cb836 with it still pulling. i was #$%*ting myself. the cb will get into a two lane weave easily at speeds beyond 180 or so, and the mirrors are the culprit. had a newish gsxr following as the speedo was off the scale. after 100,000ks it will only pull 180-190 tucked in and flat out. still heaps for a bike that would pull just over 100mph new!!!!
cb750s will do amazing things if you can put aside your mechanical sympathy.

It was only a matter of time before a "how fast is your CB?" thread appeared.

I'm a wimp and it's very uncomfortable at over 90 - not much point on our roads anyway. There are more thrills to be had on nice bendy bits in my opinion.

Dragman - is that a CB in your picture? Post a proper pic and give us some details about the build.

I generally only ride mine in twisted roads, but one day I happened to ride on a highway, found a long stretch of road and thought it was the time to test it. Reached about 180 km/h, but I #$%*ted my pants. The feeling of speed is higher on a bike than on a car. Also, the effect of wind makes it hard to reach high speed on a naked bike. I was scared of looking at the clocks and also was not confident on my easy-to-lock rear brake. Hit a small bump with the rear wheel and my arse bounced like it never had, that's when I understood that 30 year old rear shocks can't give much grip at high speed, so I slowed down and thought that was enough. Since then, 140-150 km/h is the maximun I get and generally for overtaking. I usually cruise at 120-130 km/h, is the speed I feel more in control with the bike.

;D Never been ON a dragstrip, so don't know about e.t.'s either, but had my '76 750F up to 120~125 mph and it was wanting to go faster.  Was pushing over the redline when I decided that was enough.  Who the hell needs caffein?   :oThat was fun, but thinking about it later is scary!

Okay you speed freaks - remember these: "There are old bikers and bold bikers, but there are no old bold bikers." AND "Motorcycle riding in itself is not inherently dangerous, but it is very unforgiving of any incompetence, carelessness or excess speed!"  And the big one, "You're a long time dead."

You're some real funny guys. But to answer the question, my K-0 with 836 kit and 4 into 1 header and no other mods.  except jetting has done  the quarter mile in 12.60 seconds at 105 mph at the dragstrip on a practice day. It runs dead even with my friend's Kaw 900 Z-1 up to about 125 mph top speed.

i agree with steve ,i know my limits and only get to the ton on a long piece of road with good visibility and no traffic, i also find it more enjoyable on nice twisty roads where you can go slower and enjoy the handling of your bike and the scenery 8)  mick.

That pic with the guy in pieces makes me glad I waited till my 20s to get a bike.  Even now I sometimes forget I'm not invincible.  Ive maxed my GS1100e out 2 or 3 times...about 145mph, which is stupid fast but quite a rush.  My 550 has seen 115mph going down hill :D but I take it easy with my baby.  I'm selling the GS cuz its just too powerful and I dont fear it as I should.  I prefer cruising at about 65-70mph and hitting low speed twisties where I can lay the pegs to the ground! ;D.  BTW how do the 750s handle compared to the 550s?  I find myself accidentally scraping the side stand without realizing I'm cornering that low!  Love it!

Well.......Nobody lives forever. We all gotta die from something. None of us are gettin out alive.

That being said, we probably shouldn't speed the end result along. ;D

I'm not sure how fast my 400 can go because I only watch the tach at those speeds.  Two quotes I like;
Any fool can go fast in a straight line.
It ain't the speed that kills ya- it's the sudden stops.
Dude- your 8 layers are showing!

Steve

yes Steve thats me in the pic .The pic is at US 41 international dragstrip in Morrocco Indiana (50 mi.) south of Chicago. Some of my specs are: at the front, shortened front shocks with stiffer springs and heavier oil, a drilled (lightened) front disk, black chrome drag bars with 1/4 twitst throttle  MSD shift light, Air shifter, switch for 3 step ( 1-burnout,2 launch,3 rev limit) In the middle: a 836 kit (12:1 pistons) back cut trans(for air shifter) Ported and polished head w/ camtower hold-downs tig welded to the valve cover, A-grind Andrews cam, Dyna ign. & coils , Moroso plug wires w/Spilt-fire plugs, 29mm smooth bore Mikunis , 3/4 gal. alum. gas tank, 4-into 1 Kerker headder w/heat wrap. The seat and tail are a custum made one piece quick connect design and under the seat you'll find a MSD mc-1 ignition with 2 adjustable rev limiters(burnout and max rev limit) and at the rear there is : a three inch extention to the stock swingarm a 7inch Goodyear slick a pair of aluminium struts(hard tail) custom made alum. wheelie bars
I've made around 500 passes down the 1/4 mi. with that motor before # 1 connecting rod finally let loose @ 9400 rpm and ate that piston, jug and misc. parts. Put a stock eng. in and went in the low 12s the next week. then I started collecting high preformance parts. I picked up 1055cc & 1080 parts (turbo motors) at the time I didnt have enough to pick up the turbo but the guy showed me 9.30s E.T slips @ 130 + mph :o

Well I bought my first CB750, an F1, new in 1978 (discontinued model) and with just an RC 4 into 1 pipe I saw over 120 Mph, and to prove it, I got booked doing "Speeds in excess of 180Kmh (112.5 Mph) in a 60 Kmh (37.5 Mph) zone" while still on "Learner" plates the same year.

I never understood why I was booked for "Speeds in excess of 180 Kmh" until late last year when I bought a Honda CB750 cop bike speedo on ebay, and realised that it only went up to 180 Kmh, ha ha! Cheers, Terry. (Old, Bold, and still alive.) ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
